I sold my 8 1/2 DVD on ebay just a couple days ago, in anticipation for the Blu-Ray release. There is still a 2nd hand market for the Criterion DVDs so I am happy to sell mine as each title I want is released on Blu-Ray, I think the 8 1/2 BRD cost me about AUD$12 to upgrade.
I can't wait to hear what the next few titles will be, it should be in the next week should it not?

I did the same thing this week. I was able to upgrade for less than $10.

Ride with the Devil may not be the most exciting release per se, but it is at least confirmation that Blus are in play from Universal now in addition to Fox and Paramount. Which is funny, because I always expected it would be the American majors who would screw Criterion over on Blu and not, say, Studio Canal...

They've only released Blus of the stuff from Focus Features. Monsoon Wedding had a Blu Ray but Make Way for Tomorrow did not. We may see BLU's for Universal catalog titles but I wouldn't make that assumption yet. I think Focus Features was like New Line, where it is owned by the studio but is ran independently.

Regarding StudioCanal and their releases in the UK, I suspect we should see a bunch of Criterion titles go out of print this year.

Make Way shouldn't be considered a good measure though as a number of others things could be keeping a criterion Blu. Something like the blu Fear and Loathing is better evidence.

I'm pretty sure that's the case. I think Focus president James Schamus may have licensed the batch of Focus titles to Criterion on his own after working with them on Fox's
The Ice Storm (which he wrote).

That's true. Criterion has more Universal titles than from any other licensee, and not one has even been hinted at for Blu. You would think that
Fear and Loathing,
Dazed and Confused,
Brazil,
Videodrome,
Last Temptation,
Charade, and
Traffic would have been among the top candidates for Blu upgrades.

Too soon to speak indeed...I forgot Ride with the Devil was Focus (like Monsoon Wedding), so until we get a Brazil or a Videodrome I suppose there are no guarantees viz Universal licensees becoming Blus. Seeing as Universal has been so liberal in the number of titles it has licensed to Criterion on SD (as Jeff has alluded to), I just assumed they would be first in line to allow Criterion to release Blus. I did not expect Fox and Paramount to beat Uni to the punch, in any case, though that might have more to do with Criterion's release schedule than any other factor. In any case, I remain optimistic that Uni proper will allow Criterion to release Blus; I'm not expecting Dazed and Confused or anything as popular/contemporary as that, but slightly older/more obscure Blu candidates (which Uni would never touch on the format itself) I'm hopeful for.

Universal's late entry into Blu-ray may also be a factor. They may be behind the 8-ball a bit figuring out which titles they want to release themselves for direct profit (like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and which ones they feel OK leaving with Criterion and receiving only a licensing fee. I would expect Universal to keep Dazed and Confused and Traffic since they released those on HD-DVD.

The Scarlet Empress will probably be the first Uni blu if we're getting any. I really only see titles as old as Do the Right Thing or newer getting barred. I wonder what a very new to enter title like Last Days of Disco will have happen to them though.

Last Days of Disco was a Focus title. I'm sure they could have released a Blu if they had wanted to. (Why they released it at all is another question...)

#-o My mistake. Still a curious choice though.

Because it's a great deal of fun?
