With the the 2017 New Year's hint only a few days away, I was wondering if there have been any hints in 2016 of any Japanese film releases from Criterion in 2017?

I'm about 100% sure we will see Tampopo, but that's all I know for sure. I would hope the 1971 Silence would get a release, seeing as Scorsese's version has just seen a release.

Also hoping Criterion finally releases their Hideo Gosha films which they have done jack squat with minus Sword of the Beast and 3 Outlaw Samurai.

Hoping 2017 gives us a ton more, and hoping Lone Wolf and Cub sells, so they know their is a demand for their samurai films.

Well, Dersu Uzala is coming if that counts.

So's Written On The Wind, Heaven Can Wait, either another Yang or a Hou (or possibly both), the Marseilles Trilogy, Dragon Inn, and a Bresson. We're definitely getting at least one martial arts film, even if it isn't a samurai movie.

We're due for a Harold Lloyd title and another Chaplin after that.

We are due for another Bergman title (nothing in 2016), another Kurosawa (Dersu Uzala and maybe Madadayo), more Hitchcock (ideally, the silent 9)

Don't forget Oshima's Boy, which was hinted at in the 2013 drawing.

Whose releasing Dersu Uzula? As far as I was aware it was a Kino licence and the master elements are all stuck, uncatalogued, in a russian film archive?

Streaming on Filmstruck with a Criterion logo, and also announced at a Wexner Center presentation.

I believe that clue was for All That Heaven Allows, which slipped into 2014 with a second New Year hint.

In that interview with Marty Gross that was posted a couple months back, he mentioned that, in addition to Tampopo, he was working on another title for Criterion that he couldn't name because they hadn't announced it.

The Long Day Closes, actually.

Dreyer is one director who is very much due for upgrades. Would love to see Vampyr get one (lots of work needed I'm sure). But all Dreyer titles currently on DVD with CC would be most welcome to bluray.

Criterion does have Boy. I'd love to see it again. I'd also love to see his Youth Trilogy on Blu-Ray. And what the hell Gohatto/Taboo as well.

Just noticed Do the Right Thing now has the C branding on its artwork. Probably wishful thinking, but perhaps a Blu-ray upgrade is coming.

I think you're right. Criterion once again astounds me with their choice of upgrades. Every month, I keep hoping that Mishima or La Strada or the Sternberg set or the Agnes Varda set will get an upgrade, and so far, I've been completely wrong.

Ever since PANDORA'S BOX went OOP, and a new restoration played at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, I've prayed that an upgrade would materialize, hopefully with the Matti Bye score -- alas.

I never bought the Universal BD so I'd gladly pick this up. And while any upgrade announcement would excite me these days, I definitely see your point.

If they restore the reddish color timing, that would be reason alone for the upgrade.

possibly a Marx brothers title as well, a night at the opera wasn't in the recent universal set and is a former LD title

A Night at the Opera is with WB (as are all the Marx MGM films). If Criterion picked it up I'd be more than happy to grab a copy.

Thought they did one besides the New Year's wacky drawing.
