Pina is Wim Wenders, an IFC film & well reviews, so it's a likely release, but that rock doesn't look anything like the (cracking) iceberg in the pic. I'd go with The Great White Silence, which got the BFI Blu Ray treatment last year.

It's been a long time since I saw Crash in the theater, but that picture doesn't remind me in any way of the film, but I was also unimpressed with Crash (too corny, but not enough to make it funny in a camp sense) so maybe I've forgotten most of it too.

Car pile up near the beach? "Honk!" "Honk!"? It must be Honky Tonk Freeway (John Schlesinger). It sat on my Amazon wish list for years, but never picked it up because it never dropped below $14.99 on Amazon...and now it's going for $114.99.

In regards to the breaking waves and the seagulls:

1) Is there any likelihood that Criterion got the rights to Boorman's Deliverance? Part of the water almost looks like a hand or some sea monster. If the former, this could be in reference to the dream at the end of the film, with the seagulls representing...Voight's and Reynolds' sticking together throughout the ordeal (birds of a feather)... The bow used in the film is also of a similar shape to the one in the drawing, if my memory serves me correctly.

2) If the latter, perhaps this is just a nod to the recently announced Godzilla. I can't think of any film about Loch Ness they would have acquired, but perhaps Loch Bess...

3) Breaking The Waves has been rumored for a while. The "gulls" in the distance could be a nod to the naive characters of Karen in The Idiots and Selma from Dancer In The Dark. Also, the predominant gull genus is "Larus".

In the end, I'll admit portions of my line of reasoning seem asinine, but I stayed up pretty late last night trying to figure this one out and this was the best I could come up with. ](*,) I don't think I'll be able to sleep soundly until this mystery is solved.

I'm not convinced. The iceberg with a crack in it looks nothing like the rock in Pina. Pina is very likely to come out on Criterion as its Wenders & IFC, however I wouldn't be surprised if the clue (if it's not A Night To Remember) might be for The Great White Silence which BFI released on Blu last year.

Another possibility for Coney Island is The Devil And Miss Jones which was recently restored by the UCLA archive.

Speaking of which, why doesn't Criterion release more restorations from the UCLA Film Archive? So far they've only done The Red Shoes, Paths Of Glory, Naked Kiss, Shock Corridor, & The Times of Harvey Milk. I'd love to see The Big Combo, Brother From Another Planet, Caught, Come Back To The Five And Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean, Cry Danger, The Dark Mirror, Secret Beyond The Green Door, Letter From An Unkown Woman, A Double Life, Macbeth, Street Scene, & Tabu.

Snarky in the new year are we. Obviously if Criterion negotiated the rights to the other restorations, they are fully capable of continuing to do so and given that many haven't been released (by Criterion or otherwise) begs the question why they're worth the effort of restoring but not releasing (and not just by Criterion). I doubt it's just an issue of rights, particularly now that they've been negotiating more titles from the majors.

It's a Paramount title, as are several others (Come Back To The Five And Dime..., The Devil And Miss Jones, the Ophuls' titles...) and apparently Criterion has been negotiating another round of Paramount titles (which produced the Harold & Maude and Rosemary's Baby hints in this year's drawing)...so it's definitely a possibility.

But of course the million $ question is whether Paramount will give Criterion La Dolce Vita so that the new restoration can get the blu ray release it so deserves, if it in fact does retain the rights (which seems to still be up in the air....otherwise instead of a woman reclined on a car in the drawing, we could have had one in the iceberg puddle holding a kitten).

Maybe I turned Lang's film green because I had been reading the argument for adding The Devil In Miss Jones to the Criterion catalog recently...and I was so intent on identifying the one UCLA restoration/Paramount film The Devil And Miss Jones correctly, that my subconscious got the best of me on the other (Secret Beyond The Door...).

It's all ok by me, but if Criterion gets the rights to Michael Lewis' La Dolce Vita it better be on the 3rd disc of a 3 disc blu ray set and not in lieu of Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

1. As I'm sure you know, Fellini's La dolce vita has already been released (and re-released) by Koch Lorber with a small nation-state's worth of special features.
2. Lewis' La dolce vita is a no-go too: no one wants to hear commentary on their porno.
3. This is the only version of La dolce vita crying out for a Criterion.
