Has Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? gone out of print already? I cannot find any shop having it. Amazon lists only used copies from $62.98. upwards. I should have bought it last month! ](*,)

I would be surprised, if it has... Why not try and contact Milestone directly? Amy and Dennis very much run the label as a Ma & Pa business, and are some of the nicest and fastest people to deal with.

New Yorker released the DVD in 2007 but doesn't exist anymore. So both versions have been discontinued. The Milestone version by Image was released in 1999.

Miletone re-released it on DVD in 2007. New Yorker was just the distributor, and what's happening with other labels they distributed (Milestone, Project X) was discussed in the New Yorker thread. In short, just order from Milestone, at least for now.

Sorry, I was in LA this week working for AMIA and haven't been checking the Forum. Yes, of course, BODHI-DHARMA is still available from us. And thanks for the heads-up and kind words from everybody.

It's probably not going to DVD, but here's an interesting addition to our work. We've just completed the video master of BIG STAKES (1922 with J. B. Warner and Elinor Fair) for its premiere on TCM this May 5 for the Latino Images series. It's a film that really grows on you -- especially with some of the best tinting and toning I've seen -- and Donald Sosin's new score is just wonderful. I put up the opening titles and a clip on YouTube, or you can see it on our website. Many thanks are due the LOC for providing a really fine video master with such short notice.

We also have Ramona (1910, Griffith), And Now, Miguel (1954) and The Gay Desperado in the TCM series.

Great news.
Dennis, is there any chance of our ever getting a complete version of Los Angeles Plays Itself?
I've been wanting to see this for years.

Thom Andersen received a "Fair use" opinion from a lawyer, so he is finally able to try to find a DVD distributor for it. (For those who don't know, Los Angeles Plays Itself is an 3 hour essay film that is almost entirely clips from various Hollywood films.)
The issue (last I spoke with him about it) is finding a DVD distributor willing to distribute it, based on getting E&O insurance (edited: as Dennis says below). Despite there being a Fair Use letter, that doesn't mean that a studio can't sue over use of clips. It just means they are less likely to win the suit.

I imagine that this segment is being included because the clips in it were obviously cleared for DVD distribution, as shown by the existence of the DVD. No risk of any suit.

As for the use of Los Angeles Plays Itself, we've been always friendly with Thom and when we asked to use The Exiles footage as a bonus feature, he gladly helped out. In terms of its own DVD use, I think the problem is paying for the E&O/Fair Use insurance.

Fantastic package on The Exiles. After seeing Los Angeles Plays Itself, this is the film I was most desperate to see (were there really only 3 minutes relating to it in the film?), and it looks like it's been worth the wait.

Araya will be playing at the Nuart this November or December. The current issue of Filmmaker Magazine has the first official review:

“Araya is from another time and place altogether: Milestone Films debuted their stunning restoration of French director Margot Benacerraf’s documentary, a little-seen film that shared the Canned FIPRESCI Award with Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima mon amour in 1959. Shot in high-contrast B&W, this mesmerizing film about a seaside salt-mining community under the glaring sun of Northern Venezuela is told with a poetic, didactic voiceover and a keen sense of social and economic injustice.” — Livia Bloom, Filmmaker Magazine, Spring 2009 issue

Here's the announcement of our new deal. Once again, like with New Yorker Films, Milestone will produce, author/compress and replicate our own titles and they will be available on our own website. Any faults will lie with us. We think that Oscilloscope, however, will be a great partner in getting our DVDs out to the places people like DVD Deep Discount and other outlets that haven't had our films before.

Not yet, though we helped establish who owns the rights and they did find the original 35mm material for it.
