As I pointed out when caps from the French set were posted, the blacks on the new transfer look incorrect, like the colour space is set wrong. SC did the same thing with Plein Soleil. Hopefully Criterion will correct it.
That said, I think I prefer the new colour timing.

Is there an obvious reason the 1994 color version couldn't use the BFI's HD source?

Actually, more to the point, did the BFI include the 1994 version at all?

The 1994 version is the full color version (Thompson color), you can see screenshots on DVDBeaver.

Nah, I think I'll wait for it to be released on DVD-R by Lionsgate in region 1 as part of the second wave of Nouvelle Vague releases...

A Blu-ray boxset of five Claude Sautet films will be released in France on December 2nd. Too bad there won't be English subtitles. I wonder why such a boxset does not include Un Coeur en Hiver which, IMHO, is his best film. Maybe they save it for a stand-alone release or a second boxset? Now that high-definition masters will soon be available, I hope some company in either the UK or US will release Les Choses de la Vie and Nelly & Mr. Arnaud.

I still wonder why Sautet seems so neglected by cinephiles. To me, Vincent, Francois, Paul, et les autres is as good as anything by Rohmer or Pialat. Unlike Melville or even Pialat, he remains painted with the "commercial director" brush, even though the first of the former two was just as commercial in his own prime which was at around the same time as Sautet's. I also mention Pialat, because Loulou, We Won't Grow Old Together, and A Nos Amours were all "mainstream" releases in France. So I guess one wonders, where's the line between "commercial" and "non-commercial" from a French stand point?
Maybe Sautet doesn't "attack the bourgeoisie" enough, but then again, neither does Pialat nor Rohmer.

The Miyazaki Collection will now be released on December 8th. The bonus disc will have his retirement press conference (so it appears that Yuki's Sun is dropped from the Japanese release) and the set will also come with "with analysis, essays and commentary as well as contributions from Miyazaki himself."

The Tales of Hoffmann 4K Restoration Trailer
British distributors Park Circus and StudioCanal have released an official trailer for the recent 4K restoration of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffmann. StudioCanal will release the legendary film on Blu-ray on March 23.

David Hare reports (having spoken to somebody who worked on the restoration) that the new Hoffman restores a large amount of the material that was cut before its Venice premiere (including "a duet between Antonia & Crespel, a duet between Crespel & Franz, and an aria by Franz. The curtain calls at the end of the film have also been reinstated"), boosting the running time by ten minutes to 134. Plus, if the trailer is any indication, the restoration now correctly and sensationally reflects the colour and detail of original IB prints.

The Maggie and The Captive Heart on their way, presumable as part of the Ealing Collection
I haven't seen the latter - however as it was directed by Basil Dearden and I'm generally an admirer of his it's on my to-watch list - but
The Maggie is a fantastically sour Mackendrick comedy, like
Whisky Galore but even more so.
