movielocke, pardon my taking liberties. I added Mr Klein to the "unreleased potential licenses from Studio Canal" group until it officially gets announced in September. I'm hoping this will start more frequent releases for the Studio Canal titles expected to be coming back or new to CC.

Movielocke's post still incorrectly lists The Fallen Idol under "Kino releases", which did not happen. It should be under "Criterion Rumored to have".

Even though we only know Kino doesn't have it and Criterion might that's good enough for me. I would love for an upgrade sooner than later for it.

Shouldn't "Ran" be moved to LG retained? LG released the 4K in the US back in November.

One other update, according to the Fellini box, Variety Lights was licensed from Cineteca di Bologna. So it appears the film is no longer with SC.

are we definitive on Third Man still being with Lionsgate? I looked back at previous pages and it just seems unconfirmed that it's still with LG nor any of the boutiques. Ran getting a release (that you can pick up at Best Buys all across America) is one thing, of course

my question is whether Canal would allow CC to release Ran as part of a Complete Kurosawa boxset, given CC either has the rights to all of the films via Janus, or could easily license (Dreams, Dersu Uzala, Kagemusha, etc). I believe the answer is yes, given their arrangements for Fellini. just don't think they would allow an individual edition of it

The KL Insider said that Lionsgate has retained The Third Man. Until there is any evidence otherwise we'll leave it where it is but will gladly update it once it ends up back with CC which I expect will happen

thank you! somehow missed that. I also think it will too, hopefully we get some sort of confirmation on that soon. while Ran is one thing, I can't imagine Lionsgate putting out a 4K of Third Man

It's worth noting that many of the Kino Lorber Insider's statements are now 2-3 years old, so the info that KLI shared at that time regarding titles Kino didn't license may have since changed. It's possible The Third Man became available to license for Criterion again, but unless it's announced by them or Lionsgate we have little way of knowing for sure.

Hoffmann is also notable as it makes the first release that makes sense as a 4K title (4K restoration, common relationship with widow of director, etc) that isn't being released on the format, most likely due to Canal not doing it themselves in region B. so essentially, for Grand Illusion, Contempt (which was hinted at a week or so ago on CC's social media), and The Man Who Fell to Earth, we'd need to see Canal put those out in the UK on UHD for them to even be considered for Criterion.

I can't imagine anything else on the list (aside from the Third Man, of course) warranting a UHD release. possibly Peeping Tom, but if Hoffmann didn't get one, there's no way that will.

EDIT: The Trial as well, was looking at the main list

by What A Disgrace
I think the reason Tales of Hoffmann isn't getting a 4K release is as simple as the film likely not being as popular a title as others - Tales of Hoffmann has 1/10th of the amount of IMDB votes as either Peeping Tom or Red Shoes, which is enough of a difference to overcome any margin of error in using IMDB votes as a measurement of a film's popularity, I feel. Though I am mostly saying this to cope for the possibility of Peeping Tom not getting a 4K release due to the reasons mentioned above.

I actually think it’s probably due to lack of an HDR master. SC was perfectly happy to let Criterion and other boutiques release BD titles (like Mandabi) before they themselves did and I see no reaaon to subscribe to the weird logic that somehow the relevant studios are extremely protective of their 4K rights instead.

It seems unlikely that the TALES OF HOFFMANN 4K restoration would have been done to a lower spec than THE RED SHOES 4K, completed six years earlier, and that had a gorgeous HDR grade. I suspect it is just down to commercial factors: they don't think it will sell enough to make it worth it.

It's no doubt a gorgeous movie, but in all honesty, if it wasn't so cheap, I might have passed on it. I've seen it projected twice, once from an IB Tech print, and while the first part is wonderful, it's kind of a letdown how each part gets less memorable and generally weaker, at least for me.

If I'm not mistaken, the HDR grade for The Red Shoes is new, and the restoration originally was SDR.

StudioCanal will be releasing a 4K UHD for 'The Trial' in September for the European countries. They don't say in the press release anything about a U.S release but I think it's safe to assume that Criterion will be releasing it at the same time, just like the Mulholland Drive release.

That's great news! Wasn't the SC Mulholland Dr. UHD far superior to Criterion's? I feel like UHD has been such a weird medium of errors and unexpected slackjobs thus far, where we sadly need to wait and see for all versions to become available before deciding what to purchase..

It wasn't really all that superior at all, as the differences between the 2 releases are negligible.

The SC Mulholland Dr was slightly better encoded is all--the Criterion is very good but the SC was done by Fidelity in Motion (the gold standard)
