I just posted on the Duras topic, but there's now a fade to black three shots from the end that I had never seen before, and I've only seen the film on 35mm (several times), but I checked the Benoît Jacob dvd (I own it but had never watched the film) and it's not there.

Does anybody here know what are the chances that we shall ever see «Divertimento» (1992, as a stand-alone release, I mean) and «L’Amour fou» (1969) on DVD/BD?

L'amour fou has been in the works for several years, but it's a complicated restoration for a lengthy film. It *should* happen eventually, but probably not before the rest of Rivette's post-70s work. As for Divertimento, it may show up on an eventual French Blu-Ray for La Belle Noiseuse, but I wouldn't necessarily hold your breath.

Many thanks for replying. I understand that some copyrights quagmire with his estate is holding the release back, am I correct?

I don't know of any particular copyright issues with Divertimento, if that's what you mean? Cohen acquired the rights in the US at the same time as their other Rivettes. The only thing I know of that's holding L'amour fou back is the restoration, which Rivette's widow insists is coming along. She's been pretty amenable to releasing everything else so far; I can't imagine there would be a problem with his estate if she's still the executor.

Had him confused with Robert Bresson for a moment, that is why I thought that the issue was a coprights quagmire with the estate.

Even on eBay, «Divertimento» (1992, as a stand-alone release, I mean, and even as part of some box-set) seems to be either only available on VHS or only in completely unsubtitled editions. And as far as I am aware, even that cannot be said of «L’Amour fou» (1969).

Divertimento

Wow, I do not know how to thank you as I have been searching for this film for eons, have placed my order! It is even fulfilled by Amazon! Was just going to write that I heard something about English-friendly DVDs that are long out-of-print and impossible to get. Hoping that it was not one of those infamous Amazon glitches and, if so, this only leaves «L’Amour fou» (1969, which, as stated above, as far as I am aware, does not exist on any form whatsoever of home video) to add to my home video collection section dealing with him, already containing the rest of his filmography. 02:52 UTC+03:00 update: It has just entered the shipping soon/preparing for dispatch and shipment status!

I ordered and paid for that one on eBay years ago and the order ended up being cancelled months later – glad to hear you had better luck. In the meantime, I'm happy with my VHS!

Per Variety, the "next" Rivette after Cohen finally gets around to releasing Gang of Four is Love on the Ground. Looking forward to its release in 2024.

I get the humor but the Variety article says they’re both coming next year

And in 2016 Gang of Four was supposed to be the first release, and the DCP has played at least as far back as 2019. Point being, Cohen press releases without an actual release date are unreliable at best, but it's at least notable as the first mention of a new title "in preparation."

FWIW, DCP's of Duelle and Noroît are both screening for one week only at BAM (or in the case of Noroît just four days), beginning this weekend.

Yesterday's 4+ hour screening actually coincided with the NY Marathon. Well done, McElhatten, well done.

FWIW, you can tell this was originally an excellent print, but it's had quite a bit of wear and tear, the most egregious being a whole section (possibly a whole reel) that was apparently missing or too damaged to project. (They filled the gap with a blown-out SD video transfer.)

Didn't matter, this was even better than how I remembered it and I was especially impressed by how the ideas continually developed and evolved over its entire 250+ minute run. One thing that struck me was how Raging Bull could have used this as a starting point. I don't think Scorsese had it in mind - I don't recall him ever mentioning it, and he's cited numerous sources that inspired Raging Bull - but the basic foundation is kind of there: a blank stage recalling a boxing arena, with a central character that grapples with his own life and marriage (and confronting uncomfortable aspects of it) through his work/performance on that stage.

When the MFA screened this years ago (15-ish), I think they needed to borrow a print from Europe.
