Reports are circulating that there's some clashing opinions in the PTA camp and the Weinstein camp as to how important it is to exhibit this in 70mm--Cigs & Red Vines has a couple of suggestions on how to improve the chances of it getting shown in 70mm in your town:

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but according to the Apple site the runtime is 82 minutes.

I'd be shocked if that's correct.
EDIT: Cigarettes and Red Vines says "The film is not 82 minutes. Cute, though."

Kris Tapley just tweeted that he has heard that the runtime is 105 minutes.

Would have been interesting to see if PTA could have pulled off such a runtime, though.

Punch-Drunk Love is close, but this just isn't an 82 minute type of story.

Just to put the runtime confusion to rest for the time being, according to someone in attendance last night, the film was around 2 hours and 10 minutes long.
First Reactions Are Largely Wildly Positive
Possibly the best film watching experience I've ever had. #THEMASTER70MM
Just saw 'The Master'. A movie has never made me feel quite like this one did. I can't describe it or even rate it. I am speechless.
The Master was amazing. Oscars all over this one.
Hoffman is one of the finest actors alive. The Master is (more) proof.
Saw The Master in 70mm at the Aero Santa Monica. Surprise screening after The Shining. Its like nothing yvever [sic] seen before.
The Master: B+ hazy, meandering story with beautiful staging and headed by Phoenix's brilliant, year's-best performance.
THE MASTER is...interesting...I'll be thinking about it for days #THEMASTER70MM J Phoenix and P S Hoffman are out of this world
duuuuuude, the master was goooooooooood

More info/reactions pouring in
I'm still digesting everything I saw, but it was pretty amazing. It was like a strange fever dream. [But] not audience friendly AT ALL. There are three or four scenes between Phoenix and Hoffman that are barn burners. It also containts the best work Amy Adams has ever done. The style feels like Terrence Malick by way of There Will Be Blood. Phoenix WILL win Best Actor unless Daniel Day Lewis blows us away with [his]Lincoln performance. This is Raging Bull territory for him. Believe it or not, his performance is stranger than that fake doc he made. The only way I can describe him is 'animalistic.' (I think the Master title refers to more of a dog and his master. At least that was the vibe I got).
An ambiguous ending and not one likable character.
ANOTHER runtime has been cited: 2 hours and 30 minutes long. So we'll see.

Goddamn I wanna see this film in 70mm, but there's not a 5/70 projector in my entire state, nor any surrounding ones. Have to go all the way to bloody Chicago to see this in 70.
Hopefully the 4K presentation comes anywhere close to resolving the original.

Yet no mention on the poster that it is in Panavision Super 70? Movies in the past practically made it a selling point, and even the promos for "Hamlet" had it somewhere on the artwork, and mentioned in the trailer, "Seen in glorious 70mm format."
They've gotta emphasize how damned special this movie is!

Why falsely advertise the film? Truth is, about 95% of its theatrical exhibitions or more won't be in 70mm. You seem obsessed with singing from the rooftops something that'll only attract a niche audience in some major cities who a) are already aware and b) would see the film regardless, even if it were shot with an iPhone camera or a spy pen.
Put it this way: 80s sitcoms wouldn't have bothered putting "In Stereo Where Available" over the opening titles if only 15 televisions nationwide were capable of playing stereo sound.

I'm guessing that it might even be closer to like 99.7% (like five screens nationwide out of the 1,600 or so this will probably play on).

I wouldn't count on that either.

In all honesty, I'm definitely part of that niche audience, and would go a fair bit out of my way to see it 70mm, but I would balk at seeing this if it were shot on a spy pen.

I don't know, I said I'd balk, and I'd have to think about it. But if it's a 3D spy pen movie, that's a definite dealbreaker. I'm out.
