Oh, I agree. I was just excited at the thought of 1900-era De Niro coming back to life on the screen via CGI.

The Empire article confirms we will see a 24-year-old De Niro. Crazy. Surprised they're not teasing this out a bit more. Seeing a vaguely late-middle-age RDN in the teaser trailer wasn't exactly mind-blowing.

Last I heard of someone doing a movie of Frankie Machine, William Friedkin was going to direct it with Walton Goggins playing the titular character.

Not necessarily but given that Scorsese is going to want to try and make all the CGI work look as good as possible it's got to be that long. With things like CGI or Animation you have three options but only get to pick two. Time, money and quality. Given that De Niro, Pesci and Pacino will be playing themselves across long periods of time I imagine the task isn't going to be easy. And even with all this time it's no guarantee that it won't look really weird regardless.

I have shown almost nothing but enthusiasm for this film, but quite honestly it is going to be quite hard for me to separate myself from either how awkward or effortless the CGI employed here will work. It's one thing when a movie like Zodiac goes about reconstructing 1970's San Francisco, and you don't realize it until you see a feature on the DVD about all the work that went into it. It's another to read all this hype ahead of a release, and concerning the actual performance of the actors themselves, manipulated through the same, but advanced technology.

I love 35mm. Even this new one I'm doing, The Irishman, or the actual title should be I Heard You Paint Houses, we shot as much 35 as possible. However, there's a great deal of CGI because we're doing this youthification of De Niro, Pesci, and Al Pacino. They had to be CGI. They had to be a camera with three lenses. I was just crazy.

When Jost talks about how Hollywood encourages bloated budgets, to the detriment of the movie, this is what he means. And I can’t help thinking of that Kiarostami quote from 10 on Ten : “...nowadays they scroll through the technical catalogs on the computer, and make the movie backwards from there.”

The only one that jumps out as bad to me is the first one.

But even still, it's ... just a still. Doesn't mean a whole lot one way or the other about the movie.

The movie will come out soon enough, and then we'll know.

Even outside of it looking poor, the first one doesn’t look anything like a 24 year old. More like a 40 year old.

I suppose I’m just skeptical of the necessity of it, but, yes, it doesn’t really say anything about the movie itself, yet.

The first is bad and the last 3 are fine. But the problem with the last 3 is - they could have been done with makeup. And I am not seeing a lot of age variation. Someone said he will be in his 20's. That's what I want to see to see how it looks.

They all look alright to me the first just has a weird blending issue but I do agree with Nasir in that the other three don't really look like he's much younger at all but also with Brian C here in that they are stills so the moving image is a whole other story.

That being said the most impressive de-aging to me is still Sam Jackson in Captain Marvel both in stills and in the film itself so I kinda have a weird bias here.

While I'm at it the heavy attention and use of digital deaging in this film in particular never was a draw or a dealbreaker at all to me I was always just excited that Pesci and Keitel would be working with Scorsese again so unless the effects are a massivr disappointment I wont care all too much. But I know the quality of those effects is going to carry the weight of differentiating the timelines.... christ I didn't wanna think about it that much.

Apropos of nothing in particular, I never realized how old DeNiro actually is. He was already 30 when Mean Streets came out! Like with Ric Ocasek, I think I've been mentally subtracting maybe 5-7 years from his actual age all this time.

Do I seriously have to explain this? Do you seriously think Kiarostami was talking about filmmakers like Scorsese or Malick or Godard?

Scorsese has already made movies like the ones Jost and Kiarostami describe
