If you can't wait for May and the WCP box, Janus is now touring Taipei Story.

Also looked through the list of Janus Films thats on their website. I don't think there are any surprises (the list certainly has a lot more films on it now than previously), but did find that Janus now owns the rights to Mulholland Dr. I guess the rights reverted back to Lynch. I assume they'll tour that one soon as well.

Also, as there's been some doubting Thomases - Chungking Express is listed as a Janus title.

Oh, I see. However, I noticed that when Blu-ray is listed for all other films on Janus' website, it corresponds to a release on Criterion (except the few we think will be announced soon). I can't say I checked through each and every film, so I very well could be mistaken.

The restoration of THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC looks nice. The music is very good on its own, but it clashes with the heavy abundance of dialogue (title cards) in the film. Dreyer's film already has voices - it doesn't need more. A normal orchestral or piano score would have been better, and the film also works well completely silent.

This was also mentioned by bluray.com in The Passion of Joan of Arc press release for trailer....
* In 2016, Georges Méliès' Joan of Arc (1900) was also fully restored in 4K. The digital restoration was completed from a nitrate hand-painted copy part of the collection of Madeleine Malthête-Méliès, with the generous contribution of the Filmoteca Cataluyna.

Possible bonus material for bluray release which would be very exciting.

To each his or her own, I guess. "Normal" orchestral or piano scores almost always make me cringe. I'd rather listen to some Kurtag or Silvestrov or Smolka with my Dreyer!

When I first saw Joan of Arc the score was so distracting I muted the sound so you can throw me into that camp. I'll be willing to give it another go but my opinion of it the first time I saw it was the same one Bresson had. Nonetheless having it restored is of great significance.

While we're on the subject of music scores, Janus' press notes mention that they will be offering an alternative new score by Adrian Utley and Will Gregory. While most of the projections will no doubt be accompanied by Einhorn's score (I'm not too familiar with how DCPs work - can you encode two audio options in one package?), the new score will probably be included on the Blu-ray (along with Dreyer's preferred score, of course!).

Looks like every Bergman they've already released will be included. It says "new restorations" - which makes me wonder if the Eclipse set films might finally be rescued. Did Svensk do a bunch of new restorations? I think we've been wondering why there hasn't been anything since Persona. Perhaps they might revisit /re-release some of their early Blu Bergmans.

Also odd that Criterion have the rights to the following Bergman films, which aren't listed in the press release:

Secrets of Women – 1952
Dreams - 1955
The Rite - 1969

They also have Stig Björkman's But Film is My Mistress (2010), which must be planned for inclusion with a Bergman film.

I know people will automatically think a boxset is likely, but they didn't box up their large block of Chaplin / Lloyd / Wenders / etc films - even after retrospectives; so I wouldn't really expect one here, outside of perhaps something more akin to AK100 (which hasn't precluded the slow drip of upgrades).

I’d really just like to see more of their dvd releases upgraded.

Given the rumors of a Centennial project in the Forthcoming thread, an AK100 style box is pretty likely for November or December 2018. The question is whether it will be DVD only (like AK100), Blu, or Dual Format. My guess is it'll be Blu but mostly featureless, and this will probably be the only way the Eclipse films get an HD release, and maybe the only some of the misfits (All These Women) and rarities (Faro Documents) get released at all outside of Filmstruck.

However, I can't imagine this would preclude individual upgrades of the bigger films (the trilogy, Virgin Spring) or new releases of the MGM films.

I'm such a sucker for Bergman, I'll take whatever they choose to release.
