So why is LQ's not in the finalists? Jeez... I can think of at least three or four of those finalists than don't deserve it.
Is this a good time to use this?

Seriously, LQ was robbed by being excluded.

Echoing the sentiments. Congrats! I hope we see a board member win this contest!

The Videodrome one currently has a pretty healthy lead.

Wishing our forumites the best of luck, but that F for Fake one is incredible.

Jesus, that poor Wages of Fear guy- I didn't realize he'd stuck his discs in there, too.

Why was the Wages of Fear one removed from contention? And if there was some kind of disqualification, wouldn't one of the honorable mentions take its place, as they're the ones directly on the outside of the top 10?
Also, did anyone notice that the packaging for the Videodrome one is wrong? It's pretty obviously a bootleg copy - the front cover design should be a slipcover, and the inside design is the videotape thing.

If I remember correctly from the comments, he simply printed out the disc art as a label and applied it to a blank disc. Which is in keeping with the genius displayed in the photo.

He may be one of those anti-digipak extremists that prints out their own covers to replace the original packaging.

If the Wages of Fear one was disqualified for that though, then the Videodrome one should be too.

Those finalists suck so much-- Jesus Christ, Criterion, no wonder you keep approving all that lame cover art lately!

The Repulsion guy is being a pretty epic sore loser, so I take back my comment about him being robbed.

Lots of people were re-taking their photos or cropping them to 16:9 out of paranoia of 'contest rules' but obviously it didn't matter, as some winners were not in that frame.
By the way, with a lot of those pictures, some people took a lot of time and effort doing them. Pretty amazing. For me, the apple peeling took 1 try (and getting it to curl into a "C" shape at the edge was just pure coincidence), placing eggs around the DVD? Simple. Ikiru also took 30 seconds. But still, had a lot of fun.
And really a good laugh that The Vanishing was mentioned.

Hey all, new forum member here, first post. I'm the guy who shot the "F for Fake" photo that's a finalist and the "Wages of Fear" photo posted above. I'm speculating that maybe the judges decided not to put two photos by one person in the final ten, and so removed one of them. That's my theory anyway. (Or maybe they decided at the last minute that they didn't like the "Wages" one after all!)

Haha, that is a pretty fair reason to have dropped the Wages of Fear one. If you win, can I buy some of your winnings off of you?

If they had to keep only one, I kind of wish they'd gone with the Wages of Fear. It's stunning. But that F for Fake photo is awesome as well. Terrific work!

mfunk9786 wrote:Some questionable choices there. Not only was LQ robbed, the Repulsion one was too.
not including that Repulsion shot is an absolute crime. that was great.
Also thought there as a Wages of Fear one w/ the oil that was amazing too. both were surely better than the White dog, Hamlet, Silence of the Lambs, and Women under the Influence - by a mile.
matrixschmatrix wrote:Jesus, that poor Wages of Fear guy- I didn't realize he'd stuck his discs in there, too.
he said in the original entry they were just CD-Rs he put labels on he scanned from the discs....so he wasn't THAT committed to authenticity.
it's an amazing composition though, and seems to clearly be among the best. no idea how it missed the top 20, let alone the finalists.
ETA: and it appears I should read through to the end before posting - sounds like the two images by one guy is a good enough reason to exclude one. I think the Wages one was better though. F for Fake looks like the sole competition w/ Videodrome. I am curious to know if that's a bootleg in the latter...that would be so not cool.

meh...he had every right to expect to be in the final group - it's a great shot and had tons of likes or whatever. i only see one post w/ a short vent noting it didn't make the cut. it IS rather hard to believe it didn't, but i'll never understand whacky C's prudishness. so bizarre.

There were something like 1300 submissions, and maybe 50-100 that might have deserved to win something. Just because one that didn't make the cut involves partial nudity, the folks at Criterion are suddenly prudes? Who put out the movies that inspired the risqué shots in the first place?

He didn't have any right to act like a spoiled child all over Criterion's FB page and the finalists' page when he found out he wasn't chosen, though.

Has he been deleting posts? The only one of his I see on the finalists' page is just a 'I think mine should have won but I respect the judges' decision' kind of thing

Maybe I should use my 10$ certificate to buy The Vanishing?
