what happened to the $30 dvds? it seems everything coming out of CC is 40 for both single and double discs...stupid new logo

btw, love the new art for Yojimbo and Sanjuro. just wish there was a box set for them.

It's the same as (almost) always - commentary or two discs equals higher price point. There is a box for Yojimbo and Sanjuro, with a $10 discount than buying them individually.

This is the first, and hopefully only, time I'm going to waver in my support of the new design, but Mouchette would look a thousand times better if Pac-man weren't after her. That being said, I wouldn't want The Line on it either, just the tab alone.

Whats up with the guns on Yojimbo?

I don't know who it is, Alonzo, but it is definitely not Jaime Hernandez or Mike Allred (collectively know as 'the same guy').

With all this illustration, I'm tempted to wish for a Mouchette cover by John Kricfalusi.

And how damn long is it going to take them to get an Adrian Tomine or Chris Ware cover. I'd buy that no matter what movie it was for.

I love the art work for the Monsters & Madmen box set.

But why does Criterion keep releasing these horrible campy horror movies from the 1950s Hollywood era? These movies aren't even HVe worthy. Give them to Anchor Bay to release.

well i guess it just seems like there has been a lack of 30 dollar criterions, but in reality there have been around 4 i guess since the new look. I just thought that Criterion was making a gradual change to more 30 dollar dvds. This was near the time of the Au Hasard dvd, i remember there were quite a few 30 dollar ones. Thats what i meant. Just thought they were heading cheaper until the new logo.

Also, although i love the Yojimbo/Sanjuro covers, the fact that the background for both are exactly the same is bothering me. (i mean exactly the same, all the same shadows/imperfections/etc. i like the look of them, but they didnt need to use the same picture of the paper)

Might just be that, ya know, the people at CC like the movies. I mean, really, no matter what the BS slogan on the back of the box says, the collection is dedicated entirely to CC putting out movies that they like. Any other qualifiers are secondary, and that's fairly obvious.

I really like the Monsters and Madmen box (and will even more if these four images form part of the covers for the two cases in the box!) and the Yojimbo and Sanjuro covers are amazing. I'm out on Mouchette (and the November/December titles) so far. I'll have to see them in my hands before I make any comments!

B-movies/camp are a part of cinema and deserve attention like any other film. You don't have to buy them. I respect your opinion, but I wouldn't go as far as calling films "horrible" just because they don't fit your taste.

I'm definitely in favour of Madmen & Monsters/Border Radio/Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, etc. Criterion have got a real Moviedrome vibe going at the moment - lots of crazy but interesting neglected movies with a healthy sprinkling of established classics for good measure. A lovely mixture.

An extra Moviedrome/Criterion moment is that in 1994 Jane Campion's Peel was shown as an extra in between Halloween and The Baby. I remember that being a fantastic nights viewing! (Another anecdote is that I remember when Mark Cousins took over the series the Radio Times did an interview with him, and he described how he was given a book of all the films the BBC held broadcast rights to and was given free reign in what to choose. The Mouchette cover is the worst CC cover ever. It looks like bad fan art.

Yeah, that Mouchette cover looks really underdone, in a way that makes me think it's temporary. It's the title and director's line placed on top of what seems like a completely untouched scan of a promotional still. I would hope for more...

That said, the Monsters and Madmen cover is absolutely beautiful, and I dig the new Sanjuro/Yojimbo covers.

Sheesh, 7 films to buy in one month! Late Christmas present.

It's nice to see such a fine integration of the new CC logo in the Sanjuro and Yojimbo covers. They've actually been integrated into the overall composition instead of just stamped on afterwards.

yeah, there are definitely over 360 worse covers than the Mouchette cover, good call

The Mosters and Madmen cover reminds me of Scott Morse's style a bit.
