Moonlighting is already available in the US in a reasonable if barebones DVD from Trinity. It's likely the best we'll ever get.

That was just a guess out of the blue....there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to what gets the upgrade lately, so i figured I might as well pick one I'd love to see

Thanks, knives. The DVD is pretty barebones, but it's definately watchable. It's certainly worth the $2+ shipping price offered on Amazon. I'm still holding out some hope that it will one day be inducted into the Collection. It really deserves better. (Please do it before Jerzy dies...)

I'm gonna say the only new mainline titles will be Phantom Carriage and the Three Colors Trilogy, otherwise I'd also put Emigrants and Newland on the list.
bluray upgrades: Wild Strawberries, Lady Vanishes
something eclipse I hope (maybe Bulldog Drummond or Rosselini v2 (Socrates went up on Hulu recently)).

They haven't released a boxset in quite a while, so i guess they will be releasing Three Colours in September.

Watch it be only Red that gets released...

That's what I'm worried about. They haven't even hinted at having the rights to
Blue and
White. I think somewhere else in this thread or the MGM thread someone from MGM confirmed that Criterion acquired the rights to the whole series, but I'm still not certain if that's true.

mk2 who owns the rights to all three films confirmed that Criterion has the rights. Criterion also got the Chaplins from them. (and other titles)

No one's predicting Carlos?
Maybe it'll happen, then.

Well, I think we can safely assume after today's newletter that they've got all three. Frankly, though, I thought the MGM releases were fine--the
Dekalog would be a much better acquisition.

Hulu showed us that they have a lot of titles MK2 also have (Mon Oncle D'Amérique, l'Argent, La Cérémonie, Grémillon's Remorques...) though I don't know if they got them from MK2. Maybe they got Mizoguchi's Story of the Last Chrysanthemums too?
And Ub Iwerks' Flip the Frog !

I agree 100%. I hope
Dekalog is on the agenda. Still,
Three Colors is certainly an important set of films. If for no other reason, that warrants it being inducted into the Collection. It'd be unreal if Criterion were to announce
Dekalog in the same year as
Three Colors, though! That's the stuff of wet dreams. 8-[

Considering the existing R1 edition of The Decalogue is still in print, a Criterion announcement certainly would be unreal.

Yeah, and the current R1 edition isn't god-awful, either. Neither was the existing MGM box of
Three Colors, really. I always welcome the induction of deserving films into the Collection, though. I won't say "poo" to a balls-to-the-wall Criterion release of either series!

If nothing else, the Three Colors movies weren't available in HD except on region locked French discs before- that alone justifies Criterion putting them out. Besides, the MK2 Chaplin discs were pretty solid, and that inspired Criterion to put some extra effort into really excellent sets of features. If the same is true of the Kieslowskis I'll be more than happy.

I just hope that they don't do what they did with the Jean Vigo set and try to consolidate the three of them over the course of, like, two disks. (That wouldn't really make sense, but they could do it!) It worked with the Jean Vigo set, since there was only one feature film; but each of these three requires individual treatment and individual supplements. I'm all for a 4-disk set with supplements on disk 4, or a three-disk set with supplements spread about. I'm really glad Criterion acquired these, though.

I'm sure the Three Colours box will be spacious and dripping with extras, since they have the previous edition to compete with, and they'd probably have to barricade their offices to keep Insdorf off the discs. There's still a wealth of early documentaries ripe for the picking. Not especially relevant to these films, but that hasn't stopped them before.

I don't know where that idea came from, but now I'll be extremely disappointed if that doesn't happen (unless we get some Gremillon).

I would love for very little more than for Criterion to announce
Heaven's Gate as a September title. I have defended that movie for several years, and it deserves this type of recognition. When I heard rumors of it being restored by Criterion back in February I nearly creamed my pants... 8-[
Um, I second this prediction.

That's Gates of Heaven the Errol Morris documentary, not Heaven's Gate the Cimino Western, right? I haven't heard anything about the Cimino, but the Morris has been pretty well confirmed.

Both films have been rumored for awhile.
