I believe that last round, people were voting for it for the '90s list (which is where most of the segments belong) but we also have some precedent for assigning multi-part films that straddle decades to the earlier of the two (e.g. Lang's Die Spinnen in the '10s, Ivan the Terrible in the '40s, The Human Condition in the '50s).
I can't imagine why anybody would want to vote for the first fragments of
Histoire(s) in the 80s and not just leave the whole thing for the 90s, but I suppose there's nothing to stop them.
I'd say it's a completely different situation from those other examples, however, since they were all continual productions that happened to be released (for whatever reason) in parts that straddled decades. Godard was working on his project off and on for ten years. It's not as if he shot and edited everything in 1988 and then followed an eccentric release schedule over the next decade.
EDIT: Re.
The Ascent of Man: this is just semantics. I think all singular, defined documentary series like this (and the obvious
Civilisation,
A History of Britain and Attenborough natural history ones) are in the same boat. They're even more of a coherent whole than the Godard: one big production packaged into x episodes. Personally, I don't think I'll be including anything like that, because there's going to be an embarrassment of riches of truly cinematic fare.

I was actually asking whether people would want to vote for the entire 8-part film during the '80s project or during the '90s project, because I think it's important that we all be on the same page. You make a good point though, and it seems to make more sense for the '90s.

Is it too early to put in a vote for the next genre project? As I mentioned in a different thread, I'm now on my university's ad hoc film studies department, and am also starting up a human sexuality minor. The film studies chair and I are crafting a new course on sex/sexuality in films that would fall under both minors. I know that it's a rather amorphous genre, but I'd like to throw in my vote for erotica or perhaps more generally films dealing with sex/sexuality. If nothing else, it should give me ideas for a year from now when the course makes its debut.

Well, that could fall under the category Matt facetiously suggested but I've been bolstering ever since: Romance. It could encompass romantic comedies, screwball comedies, sappy Lifetime movies, pornos, and all manner of erotica in-between!

I thought domino was already heading up the erotica project and just talking about it wherever.

You're mistaken, I'm heading up the Exotica project, wherein I compare everything I watch to Atom Egoyan's film

There are pornos with romance in them?

Are you sure you should be involving minors in this?

This would be make for a pretty interesting project. It doesn't seem any more amorphous than "religious films" either, which I know was talked about at one point. I also don't think it should be subsumed under "romance"- while there would obviously be overlap, I think the romance genre constricts and normalizes sexual representation. For me, the most interesting sex films have nothing or almost nothing to do with romance.

I agree with Satori (not to mention how it overlaps with my own work hat should make things easier).

If you're willing to share, what's the project?
Also, I've got Tanya Krzywinska's
Sex and the Cinema as well as Linda Williams's
Screening Sex checked out from the library. I'd love to be able to go through and watch all of the films discussed in them. Is anyone familiar with either work? Might they make good textbooks?

It's pretty boring and still in its infancy (mostly I exists to have something to do while my border town project stalls). Basically its just how people react to things based on what gender they connect an object or person with to get a better sense, scientifically, on bisexuality.

I've been milling it over and am now morbidly curious how religion would go.

I figured I would run another one of these in a few months, but given how much more work I should be putting into the Docs threat at the moment thinking beyond that is a bit much for me.

The trouble is, just what constitutes religion these days
Can porn be considered a religion, if the UK courts decided Scientology is.
Is believing in a sanity clause a religion?

By biggest problem, personally, would be in the needle thin differentiation between cultural representations of religion and actual religious works. Like, I don't believe that
Exodus or
Sunday Bloody Sunday are authored in a religious way, but at the same time they're made in a way only those who have intimately lived in that culture could portray them as. Just dealing with that sort of thing, I'm sure, could produce a lot of great discussion.

Vote for it rule seems like it would cover that pretty well- if you want to call
Star Wars a religious movie, go for it, but nobody else is going to agree (unless you make a killer case for it.) If that was the project, I would explicitly say that profoundly Humanist or Atheist equivalent-to-spiritual works would qualify, at any rate.
Does anyone have a third 'genre' in mind to throw into the race?

I think that every time we do this, there should just be a Film Club-style vote (where you can change your pick) between a running list of all the options that people have recently suggested that have gotten some traction. Anything that doesn't get picked is in the running the next time.

Well if
Star Wars is considered a religious movie, then so must 'The Hidden Fortress' be
