Yes, product names were an exception to some degree, but still it was generally rare then and would seem far more unusual in a title than it probably would today.
But more to the point, even though "Playtime" has become the predominant way of writing the title for what ever reason, "Play Time" has never been unheard-of, and one can find many examples of film critics who have written it that way,

Playtime is taken from the scan of a 65mm interpositive.
The color version of Jour de fête is in SD. The 2 others are in 1080p from 4K scans. Mon oncle is taken from a 2K scan (trials at 4K were giving grain management issues).

Whew, those PLAYTIME caps look glorious. Really calls attention to the compression found on the ol' Criterion blu-ray. I'm not entirely sure yet what to make of the color discrepancy though.

Interesting -- one sees the same fundamental disagreement on color "philosophy" here that one frequently finds when comparing Japanese and Criterion versions of Japanese films.

Rather an issue of colour philosophy, this appears more to be a technical difference between black levels, that yes is common between Japanese transfers and NA transfers of Japanese films. This thread may be of some interest:

Although Japan is mentioned, it's clear that it is not a problem limited to Japan.

The difference between StudioCanal's 4K Purple Noon and Criterion's 2K Purple Noon was also similar:

I think the metallic colors are essential to the look of PlayTime. Now if we could only have the right colors without the compression. Hopefully the upcoming Criterion box set gets it right

I'm confident Criterion know all about this issue and have corrected it many times in the past. So I think we'll be okay.

The BFI disc has both color versions of Jour De Fete in 1080p, while the French has it in SD only?

I was referring to the issue of jacked black levels, rather than anything to do with Playtime specifically.

With all due respect, black level discrepancies and color balancing issues are NOT the same thing.

True, but incorrect black levels will cause incorrect colour also.

But I'm not saying that the colour between the two transfers would be the same if the black levels were fixed, just that you can't really judge how right or wrong colours are on a transfer if it is suffering from incorrect black levels.

So are people waiting for the Criterion? At only 35₤ for the UK set I'm having a difficult time holding out until the Criterion release (probably closer to Xmas).

What is it with big boxsets for French directors at the moment?! I've still got the Varda and Rohmer sets sat waiting to be properly delved into, now there's Robbe-Grillet, Tati and Epstein on the way too... Certainly not complaining, by the way.

Based on email confirmations to various members from Jon Mulvaney and an obvious hint in this year's New Year's Drawing, Criterion is definitely putting out some kind of a Tati boxset, probably this year, though it's uncertain at this point how comprehensive it will be.

I already sold off my copy of all the Tati's, including Trafic, so I really hope it includes all of the previous releases.

The rights for Mr Hulot's Holiday, Mon Oncle, and Playtime all reverted to StudioCanal, didn't they? I would hope that if SC would give those rights back, they'd give back Trafic as well.
