I'd have stayed if I'd been on my own—if I can't have English, Italian is a perfectly acceptable alternative—but I gather they started the film again from the beginning, which would have forced me to miss Too Bad She's Bad with a large and wildly enthusiastic audience. And that was one of the festival high points, so I'm glad it panned out that way.

(I'd never really had a chance to appreciate Vittorio De Sica as a comic actor before, but he absolutely stole every scene he was in from Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni with the deftness of the professional thief that he was playing.)

To update my own answer from 11 years ago:

Yes they have indeed stopped providing audio translations trough earpieces as the only translation option. With the advent of digital subtitle projection under analoge prints, there really isn't a need anymore.

BTW, I will be attending this year as well. And I am very much looking forward to it, as always.

My guess is either Faust or Sunrise. I really don't think It is going to be Der Gang in die Nacht or Der brennende Acker, which is what most of us are hoping for.

Their 1926 strand preview contains the line "...make a Faustian bargain with the devil with F.W. Murnau...", so I imagine it's that.

I was just at a silen film festival in Oslo that screened Faust on "a new print from Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden." So I assume that will be the same restoration that they will use in Bologna also.

The Leisen strand has been announced and while it's not nearly as extensive as I'd hoped, it's at least still exciting. I do wonder if sourcing was an issue... After all, the program was originally titled "Songs of Surrender," then changed, apparently because that translates poorly into Italian, to "Easy Living with Mitchell Leisen," and yet Song of Surrender is not amongst the programmed films:

I just a few weeks ago was able to check out a DVD from the UCLA FTA to watch it in the library while on a trip, so that might be a cheaper ticket if you just need to see it, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it on 35mm. Swing High, Swing Low is the one I'm most excited about now, since that only has an awful VHS rip that I've refused to watch so far.

That's an impressive line-up in the RECOVERED & RESTORED section. I see many Cannes Classics selection & recent physical media releases listed there, in addition to what hopefully means newly restored versions of Elmer Gantry, New York, New York, Dead Poets Society, Vagabond, etc.

Does anyone know when the full programme is typically released (or just when the films showing are announced in full, even without date/times)? Going for the first time this year and wondering how much of the Ghatak season I can catch there if I miss it at the BFI before...

Infuriatingly, you can't link directly to specific strand's pages as they're pop-ups, but the Ghatak strand is under The Space Machine and includes:

Surely that's the majority of what will be screening, right? I assume there may be be a few late surprise additions, but... they've already announced quite literally hundreds of movies.
I would say those will be the films in the Ghatak strand. Late additions are usually in strands like Found and Restored and 100 years ago.
What they usually do with strands like the Ghatak is show the films at the same time each day in the same cinema, so you should be able to see them all if you wish. Of course, there will be many other things on at the same time. They may also show a couple of the films twice, possibly the well known ones like Cloud Capped Star.
But, unfortunately you will have to wait a couple of weeks for the full timetable.

I just submitted the brochure notes for a Shaw Brothers film we restored that's playing in the festival and isn't listed above, so there are surely a few other surprises left to come on top of that.

Besides the selections themselves, of note is that the restoration of The Devils will be screened on a newly-struck 35mm print, as will Plan 9 from Outer Space.

I had a strong feeling that WB would strike new prints. I assume it will get a healthy arthouse rollout in the fall
