This isn't as much a recommendation as a question, but whatever. The incredibly beautiful Edi by Piotr Trzaskalski has been released on a Polish disc, but the only site that seems to sell it is in Polish and even with Babelfish I can't figure it out. While I would absolutely love to see it in the MoC-line, I know it's not gonna happen. But does anyone know an English site where it's available? I'm dying to see it again.

If Ray and Naruse are under thought or consideration, I'd like to make a few other suggestions:

Hirokazu Kore'eda: Distance (no release in the West)

King Hu: Dragon Inn (no DVD at all)

Apichatpong Weerasethakul: Blissfully Yours, Tropical Malady (no releases in the West)

There are a number of films directed by Masaki Kobayashi, Mrinal Sen, Shohei Imamura, and Nagisa Oshima that are completely out of circulation as well...

Can I suggest Visconti's Ludwig? It's that I've been waiting so long for CC to make a move on this and I am about this close to order the brasilian DVD which is by far the best representation on DVD of this magnum opus and I don't want to double-dip.

Any Visconti would do, actually! Senso would be a wet dream!

Edward Yang has to be one of the more under-represented filmmakers around. While I wouldn't say that Yi Yi got a "decent" release in R1 (if you mean the Fox/Lorber version) at least the R3 Starmax version or the R2 Japanese versions will do until the real thing comes along. (By the way, Mahjong and Confucian Confusion were both released on DVD in Japan sans English subs -- but for Mahjong that isn't as big a problem)

Of all of the titles mentioned, Taipei Story (starring Hou Hsiao Hsien) , Terrorizer, and A Brighter Summer Day are by far the most MIA and only the last title was ever released with English subs (VCD and LD). Taiwanese Cinema consists of a whole lot more than Hou Hsiao Hsien or Tsai Ming Liang although you would never know it to look at what is available to non-Chinese speaking consumers.

While we're on the subject, I would really (really) add Hou's City of Sadness, too.

The Japanese title for Mahjong is Couples [kappuruzu] and was released by Uplink in Japan in 2002 (ULD-044). It is now discontinued but you can still find copies at YahooAuction and many other online retailers. It only has Japanese subtitles.

Confucian Confusion was released as Edward Yang's Period of Love [edowaado yan no renai jidai]; also an Uplink release (ULD-045) with Japanese subtitles, now discontinued but not yet scarce.

Yi Yi has been re-released on DVD (with English subtitles) at least three times that I'm aware of and they are all better than the R1 alternative. The Japanese title is Yan Yan's Summer Memories [Yan yan natsu no omoide] and all three releases came from Pony Canyon (PCBG-50567). This last title can be purchased through YesAsia.

No, it's not safe to assume that. It's an essay that was read out by a voice actor who mispronounces almost every foreign name. It's very 1999, and it won't be on the MoC disc. Something better will replace it.

Peerpee, you have mentioned before that the MoC team might consider releasing a Murnau giftset somewhere down the line (near Christmas, I believe?). Is that still on? And how would that be packaged? In a box or are they to be just packed together in a money-saving kind of way?

A boxset would be nice...! Just think: Sunrise, Tartuffe, Faust, and two still-undisclosed more? Yu-mmy! However, I wouldn't mind waiting for your rumoured restored edition of Nosferatu for a near perfect set!
