You were right! Sciamma came in 19th. I really wonder what it is with that film. I struggled with that film too. I like it well enough. But I can't get over the fact that it is eventually extremely conventional. That might have hurt it.

But overall I think the Top 20 is very good - goes in deep into some of the year's best. Very happy to see 2 more of my Top 5 titles get added. Specially happy to see Lapid added - what a fantastic film. Godard is a good addition. And their favorite son James Gray just about makes it too.

Overall a very good list. I put a lot of store by their list as it seems to align with my taste. This is and Cahiers. Cahiers is going to come out with their list in Jan I believe. This being a decade ending year they prioritized the decade list first.

And when it comes to awards - that's the biggest hurdle of all right? Being seen. If only some films were more widely seen, they would have different prospects. It is true because it applies even to us. We all watch a limited number of films. If only we saw certain films, they would make our Top 10 too.

It’s kind of indisputable (and I feel the same way about Thomas Newman’s score, which isn’t quite as locked). As someone who somewhat vocally on here railed against Blade Runner 2049 as career-worst work from Deakins, I’ll be very happy to see him win again for work that I actually like a lot.

I haven't seen the film France submitted, but I have a hard time believing it's a) more awards-friendly and b) better than the Sciamma

The second part is debatable but it’s decided by a committee that looks for the best bet to represent France and it has Amazon’s backing and a full American rollout next month, and that worked out well for Cold War last year. Plus it’s widely acclaimed. This isn’t a head scratcher, though that’s not always true every year

Also Cats couldn’t even get shortlisted for its best bet, that Taylor Swift song

Parasite is going to unfortunately take this one, but the Sciamma will hopefully be up for other awards in response. Wishful thinking I know, but it feels like a very strange prospect to have a complete omission of a film that’s been touring around the U.S. festivals, and continuing to snowball on that buzz that started back at Cannes. But I should probably remember that I’m talking about the Oscars here.

It’s not the Oscars’ fault, they can only nominate what the country submits to represent themselves

I haven't seen Les Miserables either, and I hope it's great, but the Sciamma already has substantial critical support and is popping up all over the year-end "Best of 2019" lists, and also has a national rollout in February. Since you bring up the Pawlikowski, I think if they had submitted Sciamma's film nominations in other categories (especially Cinematography and Original Screenplay) would have been more likely, à la Cold War last year

It’s worth noting that the French committee decided this long before the film took its series of victory laps at American film festivals this fall. You have to look at this a bit pragmatically
