Plexifilm have just announced their first BluRay title: Helvetica - surely if they can do it Criterion can!
Well Daft Punk are releasing their film Electroma, via Vice, on Blu-Ray in custom made metal packaging. It might just be that the discs come with the packaging and the companies producing the titles have the option of using the *free* packaging provided, or to spend more and produce their own custom cases.Antoine Doinel wrote:Is the BluRay packaging a requirement for people who produce the format? I would imagine that this may be holding Criterion back until they have free reign on the design (that won't be impeded by the blue strip at the top) and can identify their hi-def line the way they want to.
Warner's going to be releasing about a dozen cardboardy things later this year, although I think Bonnie & Clyde may be the same type of thing, and will be out later this month.Antoine Doinel wrote:Is the BluRay packaging a requirement for people who produce the format? I asked Sony exactly this last week and was happy to discover that the horrible "blu" case with rounded edges and embossed "blu-ray" logo is not mandatory.Antoine Doinel wrote:Is the BluRay packaging a requirement for people who produce the format? If we called them "BR" then what would we call writable Blu-Rays? "BRR"?domino harvey wrote:Oh no, you're one of those "BD" people-- Viva la "BR" 4 lyfe is how we rollllll
Does this mean MoC BD's are in the works?peerpee wrote:I asked Sony exactly this last week and was happy to discover that the horrible "blu" case with rounded edges and embossed "blu-ray" logo is not mandatory.
Simpler for most of us here, maybe, but on a pure "how easy is it to say?" level, the "V" sound is uncommon in non-English languages -- even plain old "DVD" causes problems for people around these parts. Then again, "Blu-ray" has an L and an R, so I'm not sure that's much of an improvement.davidhare wrote:Nick just call them "BD".
I agree BluRay is totally naff. (Another thing I preferred about the now dead format - simplicity of nomenclature.)
Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.
It says Walkabout is coming out in a regular Criterion editionTribe wrote:The new releases like Chungking Express and the like...are those coming out only in Blu Ray? Or in both editions?
Yes, but without extras. Damn, I gotta go buy a Blu Ray now...domino harvey wrote:It says Walkabout is coming out in a regular Criterion editionTribe wrote:The new releases like Chungking Express and the like...are those coming out only in Blu Ray? Or in both editions?
So Chungking and Bottle Rocket, for now, are Blu-Ray only.domino harvey wrote:It says Walkabout is coming out in a regular Criterion editionTribe wrote:The new releases like Chungking Express and the like...are those coming out only in Blu Ray? Or in both editions?
I'm shocked that they're doing it, and it will be interesting to see what their Blu-ray release schedule is. I still think this will hurt their overall sales unless every release is produced in both formats. I hope and assume Criterion has some sort of strategy to prevent the "I'll wait for it to come on Blu-ray" consumers.jaredsap wrote:This is amazing news.
And hopefully a lesson in humility for the so many members here who were convinced that:
(A) Criterion going Blu was years off.
