Wonder where that rumour came from or why it's not showing.

I was really hoping it would have the Navajo ones + full English ones. Guess I'll probably still order anyways.

Bought the DVD yesterday at the Virgin Megastore and had a quick look into the extras: no subs.
(not that i expected them to come with any…)

TheGodfather: all of the public screenings so far have had heavily abridged subtitles that boil down what everyone is saying to a string of nouns, which are sometimes squished together into blocks of text.

The subs on the film are an artistic move/part of the whole thing/film. Some say its intentional non-english friendly...
edit: therefor engl. subs on anything besides them film itself is unappropriate.

I appreciate what the Navajo ones offer as something that is functioning more as an organic addition to the film than as an aid for people who don't speak all of these languages, and they're enough that even with my not very good French (and nonexistent Russian and German and Greek) I could still more or less always follow the general gist of the conversation, but on the other hand to say it's inappropriate to, heaven forbid, be interested in all the words that are coming out of these characters' mouths is bowing at the altar of Godard's impishness a bit more than even I'm willing to (and I'm pretty damn willing). There exist fully subtitled versions of the film, so hopefully if nothing else someone can extract the subtitles from one of those and make them available online.

I did not say that i personally find it inappropriate, but that it might be the films intention. Even though there is russian, german etcetera the main spoken/written language is french as are the extras so there is obviously no need for subs on a french dvd release.

The 3rd segment of the film on the french DVD has no subtitles at all (there is quite a lot off screen french spoken language in this segment). But if you check my previous post/link, there is allready a more complete engl. subtitled version of this 3rd segment uploaded on youtube (not the navajo subs!) so there are obviously engl. subs for the whole film somewhere in the internet. (I am myself no "downloader" of anything so i can of course not confirm where to find this or if its available at all, just guessing).

Your guess is correct, there's a complete set of "Standard English" subs already floating around online. I'd kinda like to know where they came from...

At the end of above youtubeclip the "author" of the subs is mentioned - if you follow this "name" you will find out that "they" even had a screening of FILM SOCIALISME earlier in May this year…

The 3rd segment has Navajo subs just like the rest of the film on my French DVD, and it was the only part of the film were I felt the subtitles were inadequate. I would really have liked to know more of what this off screen dialogue was about.

Yes Mr. Altman - i was wrong with the 3rd segment (i switched them off…urrgh, sorry for the missinformation!). Anyway i just wanted to point out that more complete subs allready existe…

Hmmmm....before I look......"better" how? The "Navajo" ones are what Godard wanted, right? What could be better than experiencing the film in the way that he intended it to be?

Can anyone think of other films where the subtitling was so endemic (hope that is the right word) to the film? I continue to wonder if, at near 80, Godard came up with a brilliant "first" here.

I haven't researched DVD editions of this film yet (perhaps that info is in this thread and I missed it?) but I insist on seeing it with the subtitling as Godard intended.

The only DVD I'm aware of so far, released in France, has the Navajo subs. The alternate subs are (an attempt at) a more literal rendition of what's actually being said; I think both sets of subtitles are worthwhile.

I watched this last night (with navajo subs) and indeed both sets are worthwhile whether Godard likes it or not. The words coming out of the actors mouths and over the narration are not after all gibberish. I think that Godard wanted to try something new as always. The navajo subs fit with the overall piece since it has such a heavy focus on language, it allows him to make a comment on film history, and it allows him to show you a lot of beautiful images without too much language getting in the way upon first viewing.

That said it also allows him to make a barbed comment about the united states not being multi-lingual and pressing english on the world, to the detriment of other languages, which is just the sort of thing he relishes ("You're not wrong Walter, you're just an Asshole!").

The navajo subs are there for the viewing so nothing is lost and I believe people should do him the courtesy of watching it the first time as he presented it. I hope to watch it with proper translation tonight and post my full thoughts on the thing soon.

Does anyone know what the music is for the trailer? The organ piece in G minor?

I really need to know for an essay I am writing on the film.
