I hope this means (however doubtful) that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will see uniform packaging as well.

He was referring only to Blu-ray. I think it was just a nicer way of saying, "We know our cardboard Blu-ray cases suck."

DVD packaging has never been uniform from anyone. When the format launched, there were discs in Amaray cases, snappers, regular CD jewel cases, and the dreaded Polygram scratch-o-matic drawer.

It certainly is good news about the Marienbad packaging, it really is a bitch to get it out now. Waiting the official announcement.

-edit- does it count for the dvd as well or will it be for blu-ray only??

Anyway, am I the only one who is OUTRAGED by the thought of all the blu-ray releases only being released in plastic cases. I LOVE CC custom packaging, it's one of the things I look forward to the most when I finally get it in my hands. The plastic cases, although more durable, serve only as function and no aesthetic. I love the trifolds with slipcases and all the other amazing treatments they do.

I consider this a tragedy. Soon when blu-ray takes over, CC will only be releasing their titles in plastic cases and the beautiful artistry of their packaging will be dead. THIS IS HORRIBLE NEWS!

New to the board and you choose THIS thread on THIS day for your first post. Welcome to the forum. I think I will be happy to have all the Criterion blu-ray releases in a plastic case. They'll be uniform, they're not as ugly as the cases every other company uses with the blue stripe along the top, and they won't have the issues the digipaks were having.

The early cardboard Blu-ray cases were just clearly just a stop-gap measure while Criterion was getting things sorted out. They are flimsy and cheap -- PD stuff. I prefer the consistency and durability of Criterion's custom plastic cases, but I wouldn't be opposed to an occasional heavy duty digipak with a side-opening slipcase like they have used on many DVDs.

I think you may be overreacting a bit. We still don't know exactly what Criterion has in mind, and you may still have a choice of packaging on many titles.

Z is okay, I hate the Wenders cover.

I like the Wenders cover and Z. But is this it? Another lackluster month in a row.

Three well-appointed DVDs, three new Blu-rays, and an Eclipse set -- a total of seven films. I don't much want Monsoon Wedding, but they have put together a November slate that any company would be proud of.

Agreed, Jeff. Not to mention, from my perspective, Criterion could actually do an entire month of Monsoon-style pseudo art films and still get a pass from me if the war trilogy comes down as promised in November.

I think the choice of still on Z managed to make the giant letter a tolerable design choice for once. The Wenders cover is predictable, but elegant. I wonder if the B&W means that this will be loosing the very golden tone of the MGM disc.

I actually like the Wings of Desire cover, although it is predictable.
The cover for Z is quite nice as well.

Weird, I actually sorta like the Howards End cover, if more in idea.

A little too much white space in the lower right, but I like the HE cover well enough.

That Z cover is ridiculous.

I really really like the Z cover - grainy, delicious.
