"Classy" is the exact word I thought upon first look, too. Stellar covers.

They look good, however I do think Lonesome looks terrible, like a flash-animated 7-up ad.

All this time I thought the talk about Weekend was a reference to Godard's Weekend. I've never heard about this release. Any thoughts about Haigh's Weekend?

I haven't seen it, but I've heard nothing but great things about it.

That should still be coming out at some point too.

I'll get Lonesome, but that artwork is just ugly.
MoC's "wishful thinking" artwork is much better in my opinion.

If you take your cinema advice from Bret Easton Ellis, Haigh's film
"might be the greatest film about gay men ever made".

Yes, basing it on the original poster art would've been infinitely better. The one they chose reminds me of 1980's first-apartment décor.

Wow, this is just beautiful. This is a great month artwork-wise, but Lonesome is definately my least favorite of the bunch. Too much going on.

God that would have been a wonderful cover - such a beautiful evocation of that key moment in the film. Not sure what film Criterion's cover is supposed to be selling...

It's basically
Brief Encounter with two guys in 2011. It's on Netflix Instant if you want to check it out.

I'm pretty sure this is what they were going for with the
Lonesome cover:
+
And with just a splash of this thrown in for good measure:
All joking aside,
Lonesome is definitely my most anticipated Criterion release so far this year. It will be my first Fejos, so I'm really excited to also get to see
The Last Performance and
Broadway on the same disc!

I think I had a Trapper Keeper with that Lonesome cover in sixth grade.

Call me a philistine if you must, but I'd be a lot more likely to purchase a silent film from 1928 that I haven't seen if it were packaged in the Criterion coverart than I would be if it were packaged in the MoC coverart. This is the same logic that made the Stagecoach package art and the original Viridiana cover work so well.

Classy covers but I did also hope that that was Godard`s Weekend...
Beautiful Dardenne covers though and will be getting The Royal Tenenbaums...

(ps I actually don't mind the cover.)

You guys need to look at more 1920s commercial art: that colourway and style is perfectly appropriate.

This. It's a fantastic month in every way, but that cover is among my favorites. it's perfect. In fact...I love every single one!

If anyone's keeping score, then I will add that I actually do like the Lonesome cover, though I must admit that I'm generally not super picky about Criterion's artwork. My only suggestion (But what do I know? I'm not a graphic designer.) would be to mute the colors a little to make it more in line with the MoC mock-up.
Zedz, I don't ask this to be antagonistic, but was it common to use such bright colors in 1920s commercial art?
