The Leopard got a significant restoration after Criterion released the Blu-ray, so I guess that's a possibility.

The restoration was already completed and had premiered at Cannes 2010 before the Blu-ray upgrade was released. Criterion was fully aware of it and turned it down. They even called The Leopard their best looking Blu-ray release at the time.

If I have the timeline right from
The Leopard thread, Criterion's Blu-ray was announced 3/15/10 (at which point they had presumably done a lot of work already to prep it for release) and the Cannes announcement happened a month later.
This post indicates that CC had assisted some in the Film Foundation restoration (providing their own master for color reference), but that they hadn't actually seen it. They probably assumed it would be comparable and went ahead with their release.

Janus is also presenting the new restoration of Ozu's An Autumn Afternoon at TIFF. It seems likely it'll get scheduled for a blu upgrade next year. I think all the Ozu films are in the midst of major restorations. Most people want Tokyo Story to be the first Ozu on blu but I think that film needs a fair amount of work.

This is only a guess, but I think that looks like Louis Malle's Atlantic City. If it is, I would certainly be happy that Criterion got their hands on it.

Two things:
1. Just reblogging a piece of art that I saw on my feed.
2. Aren't we all assuming that it's going to Criterion anyway, since MPI hasn't listed it yet?

Tokyo Story will be a November/December release and Autumn Afternoon will probably be sometime next year, I hope.
their post about Equinox Flower had me longing for that on Bluray, too...

Yes, this is thus one of the weirdest non-spoiler spoilers I've ever seen, since:
the whole question of what happens that night is left crucially unresolved.

Do you think we'll see a Kurosawa blu upgrade in November or December? So far no Kurosawa in 2013, and based on the calender of releases 2000 was the last time criterion didn't release a Kurosawa film (new or upgrade). I'm still hoping for a Throne of Blood blu in the near future.

Like to see Dersu Uzala released on blu-ray since they did release the movie on laserdisc years ago but have read the print is in bad shape and needs a major restoration. So far Kino has no plans on releasing it on blu-ray.

Mosfilm has already completed the HD scan. The recent Artificial Eye DVD re-issue (and a Japanese DVD) was based on it. Kino did promise to do the blu-ray a while ago, but it never materialized.

I hope you're wrong (but then I have zero interest in the Zatoichi thing). Plus, the Eclipse line put out five sets in 2009 (when AK100 was released).

I think Eclipse is getting to the point where they will have to start doing BD versions as well, since many things that are planned to go that route end up getting mainline to facilitate a Blu release and most anything getting a new scan these days is going to be done in a Blu-worthy manner. I think that's part of the reason we've seen such a slowdown of Eclipse sets.

Didn't the AK100 set draw from already released discs? If so, then it would require far fewer resources than a box of yet-to-be-released films.

If the Postwar Kurosawa Eclipse was released before AK100, then 20 of the 25 films in the AK100 had already been released on DVD by Criterion.

Huh, I wonder how much more it would cost them to do blu/dvd eclipses, or just switch eclipse to blu-ray.. I think part of the rationale for DVD was that it would be cheaper to produce, and obviously if the scans/transfers are quick and dirty, you don't need blu ray as badly (although I know that's debatable)

There's probably some Hulu/eclipse overlap or tension, too..

the master tapes for the AK set may have been fine for 20 of the 25 films, but they're still generating all new discs, not repackaging old ones. the level of work that may or may not have entailed is debatable since we don't have much information.
