I'd like to see more German films from MoC:
Nights When the Devil Came (1957, Robert Siodmak)
- Siodmak's best film, I feel.
It Happened in Broad Daylight (1958, Ladislao Vajda)
- Remade in Hollywood as The Pledge. The original is a landmark psychological drama in German Cinema.
Sterne (Stars) (1959, Konrad Wolf)
- The greatest anti-war film ever made
I Was Nineteen (1968, Konrad Wolf)
- The ultmate 'soldier's journey' movie. Immensely powerful and moving.
These Fassbinder and Wenders films might be harder to acquire:
The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty Kick (1972, Wim Wenders)
Bremen Freedom (1972, Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
World on Wires (1973, Rainer Werner Fassbinder)

Looks as though the Eureka edition of Blue Angel is out of print. Will MoC pick this one up as is (with new cover art, please!), or will it be even better?

It's "not on the production slate" at the moment, but it's tentatively planned for late Summer 2006. The old Eureka 2-disc set is interlaced. An MoC edition would be freshly encoded.

Any chance you could now reveal what Murnau titles will occupy spines #23 and #25 (since you say FAUST will move to #24). Surely if these spines have been saved for Murnau, these have been definitely decided, or?

I wasn't sure where to post this question. The articles on MastersofCinema.org have made for great reading and I miss having a new one every couple of months. I know the DVD label has kept the MoC folks very busy and I don't want to ask the impossible -- but I wonder if they have any plans to start adding articles to the site again.

Recommendation for MoC: Keep up the F'ing good work. Just got Asphalt and totally pleased. Beautiful transfers and excellent packaging and might I say: far better cover's/spines than CC. Only have two MoC titles so far, Spione and Asphalt, but they look lovely together. This is how I would do it if I was in the position. Never really understood why CC veered from the uniform spines post-And the Ship Sailed On. Like my books: love my Wong Kierdegaard translations, but never understood why others had to get all goofy on spine-and-design.
Anyway...keep up the great work. It is an honor to kick down the precious pounds (and I'm a starving rural school teacher in a backwards Eastern European town) to keep up the cause. Just can't wait for Faust!!! Please lay down some commentary as your German silents could use a little UFA juice...so much to tell!!!

I'd love to see them release a Mizoguchi, especially Street of Shame (Red Light District) for a few reasons: personal, in that it's a favorite and around what I believe is his peak, technical, in that it probably has the best looking print (from what I've seen out of the French set), and financial, as I wouldn't expect any other companies to get to this one any time soon, less the competetion. Think of the cover art!

I would like to second the request for Feuillade...a collection of the Fantomas films, with or without extras, would easily be the most important DVD release of next year.
Though, I'd be happy if MoC turned their attention to any ignored (in the English speaking world) early cinematic masters and masterworks...particularly Benjamin Christensen's first two films, Sjostrom's Swedish films, or any silent work by Maurice L'Herbier.
Frankly, forgetting the request for ignored films, I'd be stoked if you released a high-def, progressively scanned transfer of The Birth of a Nation, with some supplements. Fewer films are in dire need of worthy supplementary materials, and while the Kino disc sports an interesting selection, they do little to contextualize the film's initial reception, the accusations of racism, the film's continuing reputation (in America and abroad), Griffith's own feelings on the accusations, and the film and Griffith's many defendants over the years.

Tih Minh and Barrabas are in my opinion the most urgently needed Feuillade releases at this point, but I don't believe they've received as much restoration work as Judex, Vampires, and Fantomas.

Eureka has acquired the UK rights for Phil Morrison's Junebug:
