Honestly, the only film released within the last ten years that I wouldn't be bothered to see place at around 89 or so AND that has a legitimate chance of cracking the top 100 in my opinion is probably Portrait of a Lady on Fire. There are other recent films I love of course, but none that has a legitimate chance of making the list in my opinion. The Master might make the top 250, but the top 100 seems unlikely.

Fair enough, though I suppose it was those very virtues which left me cold. Too much proselytising, not enough poetry.
In response to rrenault above, if I were to pick some 21st century titles, I would unquestionably find room for The Master. Other films from the last two decades that I would place on that list: Aquarius (2016), No Country For Old Men, Cold War, Let the Right One In ('08) and Memories of Murder. Not a lot of mirth in those choices. I can't think of a single contemporary comedy I could place!

I was a bit mixed on Aquarius when I first watched it, but it certainly improves on repeat viewing, and I certainly wouldn't have an issue with The Master being included in the top 100. I'd also like to make a shout-out for The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão.

I'm not going to try and act like he doesn't have sone sources but most of his "intel" comes either from Twitter or the forum dedicated to awards that he doesn't bother giving credit to most of the time. He's trying to be the next Jeffrey Wells, which would make sense since he's friends with him (alongside Sasha Stone).

Keeping the thread on track, one film that I'm surprised wasn't in the top 100 in the previous edition but expect to see it there tomorrow is Come and See. I wonder that's because it wasn't available to view legally in HD prior to the 2012 list. As for films from this century, I could possibly see Mad Max: Fury Road squeaking in. Also, what is the over/under for any Hong Kong titles that isn't directed by Wong Kar-Wai to make the list?

When's the magazine out? I haven't bought S&S for ages but it will probably pick this issue up.

Frankly, given the number of times the word “pretentious” has been used in the past in connection with the S&S poll, as though people can’t genuinely prefer Bresson and Tarkovsky to Titanic and Armageddon, this will be a refreshing change.

Hmm, checking the S&S page (https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound) I can't find anything about the new poll.

I’m not on social media anymore, but I’m sure that will happen. I’m halfway expecting Jeanne Dielman to make the top 10, and while I definitely would not refer to that as a “woke” film, it does seem like a choice that would get criticized as “woke” simply because for a lot of people, the mere act of putting a film by a female director in the top 10 would likely be accused of “checking boxes,” especially considering that film in particular already seems to have a reputation among a certain subset of Film Twitter as being the ultimate “art movie that people only pretend to like.”

Get Out making the top 100 would be eye rolling. “I would have put in on my Sight and Sound ballot three times if I could” kind of thing.

Why. It’s a good movie that’s maintained its popularity. In that broad space I don’t see how it’s any different from any other film that might make the list.

It'll be interesting if the new list reflects what Godard explored in The Image Book and presents a new and often unfamiliar canon that doesn't feel like it was predominantly assembled by the Western world. The poll results were already moving in that direction with the last round, but I expect this time to be much more different. And that's not a bad thing at all - for understandable (and still regrettable) reasons, polls get discussed like college rankings, but I think they have far more value when they aren't so narrowly interpreted. I think they're best viewed as surveys on what films are making that sort of impression on people or having that sort of value. So whatever's #1, 3, 7 whatever is meaningless, and hopefully/ideally people's familiarity with the film world expands when they see something they didn't know getting mentioned.

It's just one list, albeit a highly regarded one. This is both fun and educational. (And hopefully woke, because DeSantis hates woke, so woke must be a good thing.)
