This trailer was pretty underwhelming compared to the atmospheric teaser released earlier this year. However, the CGI in context of the story is becoming a bit more acceptable.

Agreed. The first one had that great music and the almost occult shot of the rings. This new one looks like someone said “make it look more Goodfellas-y.”

The NYFF press screening ends in another hour. We should start getting responses soon after.

It's not reinventing the wheel or anything, but it's a lot of fun, full of Marty fan service and exposes a bit more of a soul than his last few features.

edit: I forgot about The Silence, that one was full of spirit.

Pacino is just tremendous here - a big, loud performance as usual but brimming with life contrasted with the creeping inevitability we know will befall Hoffa (the approximate circumstances of which is likely abundantly clear from the word go to pretty much anyone watching the movie) and the center of the film that drives the entire reason it works. The film as a whole is kind of chilling - it meanders here and there for a good chunk of time and he is invoked but as soon as Hoffa actually appears quite a ways in it instantly becomes his movie, and Scorsese expertly manages this transition as the real shape of what this story is and why it needed to be told begins to take hold. As the characters grow into very old age I felt it to wobble a bit but as it came to its very end it all locked into place. I am wary to just heap praise because I do think it sags at the beginning and end but based on my feelings about it developing intensely just in the past six hours or so I think the movie is at least mildly monumental as a bold reclamation of the capital-M Movie in a way that considerably eclipses Tarantino’s actually very similar entry from the past few months.

I actually think the movie has a LOT of overlap in its subject matter and what it’s like, actually, about with Once Upon a Time in America. Which seems kind of obvious and inevitable in retrospect but didn’t cross my mind until afterwards.

Okay, he discusses one moment in ...Hollywood, that could be considered spoiler-ish, that happens toward the middle of the film; you can read the conversation and skip the paragraph where Tarantino starts talking about frame rates.
