Agreed! It may be a flawed film, but it deserves reconsideration and better pictorial quality. Since Janus Films now has the rights, some kind of home video release seems likely, even if it's "just" part of a larger Bergman set. I've been wanting something like this for a long time.

Not sure what it means in the greater scheme of future releasing, but Tokyo Olympiad and the two Olympia films are now listed on the Janus website.

Five Films by Nico Papatakis restored, playing at Lincoln Center.

The films are: Les Abysses, The Shepherds of Disorder, Gloria Mundi, The Photograph, Walking A Tightrope.

Sounds like a Eclipse.

Wouldn't be a first, at all. At least 1 of the Autant Lara is freshly restored (and will be released on BD in France in April), and I believe most of the Guitry are from recent HD restorations from Gaumont.

The Gaumont box set has all his films in what seemed to me to be extremely good quality. I would guess they were restored for that release anyway.

I believe region free as well meaning anything less than a replication would be an utter and stupid waste.

The Gaumont set is Region Free and English friendly at least on the movies and the book.

Are any of the Bergman films in this retrospective scheduled to play anywhere but Film Forum? It's billed as a "traveling retrospective," but I don't see any announcements for venues in any other cities (though I've already resigned myself to the fact that it won't be playing anywhere within 400 miles of me).

I expect it will loosely mirror where the Wenders retrospective went two years ago. The AFI Silver in the DC area will host the Bergman series in the late Summer, as they did Wenders.

The Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley is hosting the retrospective throughout the year.

I can’t remember where I saw it as it’s not on their main site, but I’m pretty sure it will be showing at the Gene Siskel Film Center later this year.

The Belcourt in Nashville is showing sixteen of the Bergman films starting in March. For whatever reason, it's not the full retrospective (similar to how they handled the Martin Scorsese/Polish Cinema retrospective a few years back), but it's better than nothing.

Following the run in New York, the retrospective will travel to the Seattle Art Museum, the Detroit Film Theatre, the Minneapolis Film Society, the Amherst Cinema, the Northwest Film Center in Portland, the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, AFI Silver in Maryland, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts and Rice Cinema in Houston, the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, and, in Los Angeles, the American Cinematheque, UCLA, Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

no, it’s because michael govan doesn’t think commercial films should be shown at a museum. Which is why he gutted lacmas previously exceptional programming.

Unfortunately when the academy partnered with lacma, he also killed all of their even more unique programming.

But when he destroys one of the most iconic buildings by one of LAs most famous and prolific native architects and replaces it with his proposed Mayan fortress of solitude I’m sure govan will be properly celebrated then. :-/

I had hoped that UCLA would get this retrospective because they respect the medium at least.

FWIW, Liv Ullman will be appearing tonight (at Shame) and tomorrow afternoon (The Passion of Anna) at Film Forum in NYC. They're probably sold out but there's always stand-by tickets if you're willing to wait a while and get there early.
