HENRY & JUNE would be a killer Criterion. There's so much documentary material they could utilize, and they could do a neat featurette on the birth of the NC-17 rating (which I highly doubt this film would actually receive today).

I'd prefer Henry & June, but Quills is rated a full star better on IMDB, go figure.

The only Kaufman I'm much of a fan of is his remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which is already out on Blu. The obvious contenders in terms of reputation are Unbearable Lightness (which I find pretty dull, quite frankly, but it's already a Criterion title) and The Right Stuff, which is probably his best-regarded film generally. Is that a licensing possibility?
I'm not much of a fan of Henry and June, either, but, as noted, it does have a lot of potentially juicy extra potential, including its censorship / rating story.

You're kidding right? I must have had to watch that trailer a jillion times the year it came out. "I've memorized it" still gets a laugh in this household.

I'm pretty sure it's not, but only because Warner is working on their own special edition Blu-ray version, which I've heard from places like The Digital Bits is taking longer than expected due to some necessary restoration work. I love
The Right Stuff too and can't wait to see it in hi def.

I would love to see The Unbearable Lightness of Being on Blu-ray. That would be really nice. It's second on my list of all-time favorite movies.

At this point WB is probable targeting next year, 30th Anniversary and all.

Henry and June, which is a Universal title with only a 13-year-old featureless DVD on the market seems the most likely candidate.
I wonder whatever became of Darius Khondji's trip to the closet. I think the consensus was that Stealing Beauty was the most likely candidate, but nothing ever came of that.

I thought Khondji's trip had something to do with City of lost children?Wasn't that title rumoured 2-3 years ago?

You are all going to be so angry when Criterion releases Rising Sun! (Which I'd love by the way, but then I love all of Philip Kaufman's films!)
What about The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid? It is a Universal title and, Stagecoach and The Baron of Arizona (and maybe Days of Heaven) aside, Criterion are still pretty light on westerns.

Don't forget about Anthony Mann's The Furies.

Did any bother to read that Kaufman was in NY because of a MoMA retrospective of his work? Criterion very well could have invited him by to keep up relations with filmmakers, get some tickets to screenings, and make a quick website video.
But I love how he says he just wants things to go see for inspiration and not as a collector and ends up grabbing box sets of films he is obviously very familiar with.

There are hundreds of filmmakers in New York everyday, but if they're in Criterion's closet, they're usually there for a reason.

Was Mottola at Criterion HQ? I thought he only did a Top 10 (which they get from all sorts of people via email). With the notable exception of Khondji (so far), I think that everybody who has got to pick titles from the closet contributed something to a release. Criterion is known for paying contributors in movies rather than cash.

That SNL dude who hosts TCM sometimes was in the closest if I remember correctly.

Bill Hader, yes. Also Adrian Utley of Portishead (though he curated their ATP films). I supposed that they might have someone like Hader there to make
Amarcord look cool to college kids. I'm not sure Philip Kaufman carries that same cache. I still don't think that Criterion is inviting random filmmakers off the street to come up for some free stuff.
