What is it? Cigarette smoke? If so, that's kind of hilariously appropriate for the film.
kinda ugly, though

Yes. I don't like how it gets less cloudy near the top of the tree, but clever nonetheless. Looks like a paperback novel

I have to say, I am glad they didn't try to Photoshop the faces of the cast into the smoke. But wow, a third try on this cover. It's a hard film to pin down.

Ah yes, the base of the tree is in fact a cigarette, so there you have it. What a stultifying improvement over both of the earlier covers. Of course, it is only a matter of time before it is summarily banned from sale in the U.S., due to its depiction of cigarette smoke as something that exists.

What's with the beloved wacky C getting overlapped by the 'A?' A big upgrade from the previous cover, but that boo-boo really irks me--more than I thought it would, actually.

A greatly superior cover, and it's good to see that they're finely willing to obscure the Wacky C, which hopefully means no ridiculous intrusions à la Bicycle Thieves.

I guess it's an improvement insofar as it actually has, you know, an idea to it (an admittedly clever one), but I really think it's even uglier than the boring abstract xmas lights one.
Oh well, it's not like there was any chance of me not buying this, so whatever.

They couldn't just go ahead and use the wacky C as the first C in "Christmas"? Looks like shit.
"C A Christmas Tale!" I have no plans to C it, thanks.

Third time's a charm. Aside from some aforementioned design issues, it's pretty great. Like an as yet unpublished Perrotta novel.

Could you imagine how bad that would actually look? I can see the comments on this board now... "A
Ristmas Tale? I'm not buying whatever that is."
Reminds me of:
"Try the Merlin Chop, a half pound of Merlin, served with steak fries, vege-table of the day, and whipped dessert."

Criterion told someone via Facebook to email Mulvaney about replacement cases for the cardboard Blu-ray jobs (400 Blows and The Third Man were asked about, specifically). Hoping they have something better set up than, "Pester us via email until our generosity runs dry."

Yeah I got an e-mail a few days ago as well about replacing the too tight Marienbad dvd slipcase and that they`d ship a replacement.

So, I don't know if anyone else spotted this, but the cover art for
The Rules Of The Game has been modified with the new "wacky C" logo.
http://www.criterion.com/films/295
My first thought was that it is in preparation for a new Blu-Ray announcement at the end of the week. Which, of course, makes me
very excited.
Thoughts?

Unless a DVD re-issue is released, they usually don't change the DVD logo to the wacky "C". Rules of the Game has a unique packaging, so they might have just added it to the plastic. However, the Blu-ray edition shouldn't be long, as it is a staple classic from the catalog.

Apparently this change isn't that new. According to
a post on dotcom, it happened at least as far back as July.

Yeah I picked it up at the Barnes and Noble sale in July, quite excited and thinking I had some mistake or maybe it had something new.
I guess they were doing some late cleaning trying to get rid of further possible anger from the anti-bluray-cardboard crowd.

Does anyone have a link to pictures of the new RotG packaging, aside from just the new cover?

No pictures, but I saw it at my local BN. It's just a standard figure 8 case, and the cover art is tinted blue, but there's no clear blue slipcover.

Spotted and noted
in this very thread back in July.

The change to the wacky-C happened when they decided to discontinue using the blue plastic slipcover on the release. Otherwise the releases are identical.

I'm now tempted to trade in my digipak for a standard figure 8 amaray case, if anyone is interested please PM me.

Some crappy looking iPhone photos of the new Third Man case, which arrived from Amazon today after a long delay in them getting any re-stock. Now we know why!:

Today I received the supposedly wider slipcase for the Marienbad dvd version. I replaced the old slipcase with the new one but it still has the same problem, it`s still way too tight and impossible to get out. Anyone else who had the same problem?
