If Criterion picks this title up and doesn't want to pair it up with It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World; it's worth noting that the Image dvd of the Volker Schlondorff/Dustin Hoffman version is out of print. It's a Westchester title and Criterion has licensed plenty from them. Could make for good back to back spine numbers....

Or even a single spine dual film release, ala The Killers

Bigger question: if Criterion
does release "Mulholland Drive," is it still going to be 'censored'?

Lynch censored it himself, so probably.
Edit: I know you're just joking. :-#

Restorations of Mauvais Sang and Boy Meets Girl are set to debut at NYFF in a few weeks. On home video; these were Fox Lorber titles that have been long unavailable. Janus has picked up most of the Lorber library. Wouldn't be surprised if they grabbed these Leo Carax titles for eventual release.

Fingers definitely crossed over here, Ian. I'm hoping to hear some good news on this front, sometime before I'm relegated to an eldercare facility, where all anyone ever wants to watch is Cocoon, over and over.

That would be great. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever picked up the rights to those two films also got
Pola X, as they were all part of the same library.

Did I miss something? When did this happen? I had assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the Lorber library was with Kino Lorber...

Off the top of my head: the Truffaut, Demy, Rohmer, Fassbinder catalogues. Z; Senso; other assorted titles.

Yi Yi and
My Dinner With Andre too.
I think basically, Fox Lorber begat Winstar, Winstar begat Wellspring, Wellspring begat Genius. And lo, The Weinstein Company purchased Genius, but let the rights to everything expire. Janus has since purchased most of those rights. The Lord saw this, and saw that it was good.
In the dark time of the Weinsteins, Richard Lorber fled taking some film rights with him. Richard Lorber knew distributor Michael Koch, and Koch Lorber was born. Koch Lorber was consumed by eOne, which was evil and wicked. Again Richard Lorber fled, again taking some film rights with him. He knew Donald Krim, and lo Kino Lorber was born.

Speaking of My Dinner with Andre; Demme's Wally and Andre pic Fear of Falling is playing in competition at Rome. The fact that it's been ignored by all the other fall festivals is a little troubling. Hope the reviews are good.

I think it's still unfinished. It's screening at a Demme tribute as a "work in progress" at the Austin Film Festival next month.

Here's some of my research I did a while ago into what Janus has picked up from Wellspring/Fox Lorber.
It appears that Kino picked up/still has some titles from Lorber - Russian Ark, Nostalghia, etc. Janus certainly seems to have gotten the lion's share though.
I really hope Janus picked up the Itamis. A Criterion of
Tampopo and
The Funeral needs to happen.

I will certainly love Costas-Brava Z done by Criterion. That film certainly needs a better release and in the process, they need to issue Missing on Blu-ray. Never understood why they didn't do that the first time around.

Has anyone seen the film The Ninth Configuration? Someone on Facebook was asking Warner Archive about a reissue of this and they responded that they've let the rights expire. Reading about the film; it sounds fascinating. Have no idea if it's Criterion-y.

I asked them circa 2000 about releasing it and was told no because of rights. I'd love to see them release it...makes a great companion piece to
The Exorcist.

Nineth Configuration desperately needs a truly great release as the DVDs (except for the Italian one, I believe) are non-anarmorphic and the PQ is not ideal, even for the DVD format. I'd buy a Criterion BD in an instant.

I saw it on a crummy DVD via Netflix a few years back. You can still get it through them. I would call it decent at best, but probably not the sort of film that I would think qualifies as great or important.

I love The Ninth Configuration and would like to see it released in a better transfer. It is part of Wiliam Peter Blatty's "Trilogy of Faith" along with The Exorcist & Legion (Exorcist III).
Blatty once referred to
The Ninth Configuration as the true sequel to The Exorcist and has stated that he intended the character of Captain Cutshaw to be the same astronaut that a sleepwalking Regan in The Exorcist warns, "You're gonna die up there." In The Ninth Configuration, Cutshaw mentions a fear of dying in space that is almost certainly a reference to Regan's line in the previous film. However, the characters were played by different actors and the astronaut in The Exorcist is not named by the credits.
