Every time I see a film I like listed here I have a similar feeling to when a football club I like gets relegated: I appreciate how they're still available for me to follow, but man do I wish they were playing in the top tier.

We reached out to them and asked to allow us to scan the camera negative in 4K and have the DP oversee the new transfer and color grading. This would've cost us low five figures, we wouldn't be around for too long even if we spent $20,000 to $25,000 on our masters, not to mention anything even close to the numbers you're posting above.

So trying to piece this together, Kino would have liked to have done a new, 4K negative scan for "low five figures," but Disney (who I assume is still the rights-holder?) wasn't interested unless Kino would commit to funding a "full restoration"?

Thank you for releasing all of these John Huston titles, Kino Lorber! Are there any plans for one of his greatest and yet most undersign works, Freud?

We've looked into releasing Freud. It hasn't been available to us, so far.

That’s a shame. It’s always been difficult to discern why Universal has sat on Huston’s Freud all these years and elected to never release this fine film in any Region 1 home media format.

Unless there are unresolved music rights issue, since Fox used part of Jerry Goldsmith’s score from Freud for 1979’s Alien movie.

I just quickly looked at the Port of Shadows Blu-ray. I think everyone should be very happy with the quality. It looks very strong and sounds wonderful. The interiors look lovely with excellent detail. I can't imagine it looking any better. I adore French cinema from the 30s, so this along with The Baker's Wife has been a very satisfying month.

IIRC though, 60% of the restoration is based on something like a third gen element and it shows.

Some of the exteriors look rough, like the shipyard and the amusement park. Although not sure if stock footage was used for those. It’s by no means perfect, but many scenes and much of the film looks very solid.

In Gary’s review he mentioned it had a 2k transfer performed on it and who did the work. I’m assuming he got that info off the Studio Canal region B release. Kino doesn’t share that kind of info.

I also got my info from the SC disc, supposing this is the same restoration. There was a 10 min featurette on the SC disc explaining how the reconstruction was done, since the OCN was incomplete. They had to use a 1938 preservation copy to complete it and obtain a result closer to the original cut wanted by Carné.
I'm stating this because I do recall watching the SC BD and thinking how thicker the movie was looking during many sections and realising that must simply be from the loss of generation. It is still a very well done restoration, nothing to do with digital fuckery, but it shows its flaws.

Kino have corrected the gamma levels though.

Any update on this? We've got release dates through November now but still no word on this film.

When was Vadim’s Les liaisons dangereuses announced? It’s so fucking awful a film, even for Vadim, that it beggars belief— would not have been my choice to license! Glad to see a street date for the excellent Buffet froid though

Really, that's the one you decide to pick on? The film is a classic, maybe not the best adaptation of the novel, but still a classic. How can anyone go wrong with a film starring the amazing Jeanne Moreau.

I hadn't heard anything about that Our Hospitality release. Where can I learn more about that? There are too many rival Keatons coming out.
