I had not been following that pick up for Les miserables, so good on Amazon!
The Grand Prix goes to...
Atlantique by Mati Diop

Unless there's some weird Tarantino surprise (he is here, and so is Deneuve, who gave him the Palme in 1994), Bong is a great choice.

He must be glad it's not a Netflix production.

Funny commenting on films unseen, but with the hype I did hope for Portrait to win, but I love Bong and this could have turned out way worse. Plus it makes up for Burning, and two Asian films winning in a row! I'm happy

Happy for Bong---it was clearly one of the most praised of the festival (it won the ScreenDaily grid) and it looks fantastic, but I'm still disappointed that Sciamma didn't break the streak.

That was a great spread of awards, though I also think a bit of a shame about Sciamma. Tarantino will manage quite well on his own I'm sure, as will the Ken Loach in the UK at the very least. The Almodovar was already well received. Everything else received a great push.
(The only concern is that we just have to hope that Artificial Eye puts out Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo out on DVD as they did with Canto Uno)
I always find that need to shift over to the Canal+ live feed then back to the
Cannes Livestream for the post show Jury press conference a bit tricky!

Based on this
critics grid, it's the second year in a row in which a South Korean film is the most acclaimed among Palme d'Or contenders.

Screenplay for Sciamma is still better than her and her film walking away empty handed even if it smacks of a consolation prize given the critical reception of the film by reviewers and peers alike. Maybe they should have swapped her and Mati Diop around. Agree with everyone else that the director's prize for the Dardennes feels wrong: not that no director should ever be deserving of a third award but Young Ahmed is by most accounts mid-tier for them; this should have been given to Sciamma or Almodovar. Speaking of which, very happy for Antonio Banderas! Honestly, considering this jury consisted of seven directors, this could have been a lot worse. Can't wait to see Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Parasite, Little Joe, Zombi Child, and The Lighthouse.

I'm very happy for Bong. I hope this means we'll finally get a proper Blu-ray release (or even a 4K, if I can dare hope!) of Memories of Murder, which is still currently my favorite of his.

That's a nice pick-up on Netflix's part, especially since they've been outbid on everything they've gone after so far.
I cannot help but wonder if Netflix's pick-up is motivated by Cannes's new rule that they can bring films so long as they are ineligible for prizes, but I don't know who was going after Atlantics anyway.

Distributors on the changing film industry to Indiewire
Distributors are already contending with a paradigm shift. The influx of deep-pocketed Netflix and Amazon, with their capacity to gobble up worldwide rights, meant that many of the highlights from the Cannes lineup came equipped with hefty price tags that most specialty distributors couldn’t touch. Within a day of French director Celine Sciamma’s acclaimed Competition entry “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” the asking price had careen from high-six figures to over $1 million. Most buyers dropped out of the bidding process early on. The movie would eventually sell U.S. theatrical rights to Neon, which split the cost with Hulu.
As the dealmaking continued, several American buyers gathered at a beach tent party late one night, commiserating over the obscene price tags beyond their reach. “It’s fucking irresponsible!” said one buyer, raising his voice over blaring music from a nearby speaker. “It’s all Amazon’s fault, too.” Another buyer spoke up. “No way,” he said. “It’s Fox Searchlight! They spent $14 million on the Terrence Malick movie. Insane.”
Another buyer spoke up. “You mean Disney,” he said. “That’s Disney.”
There was a brief pause in the conversation, as the jarring bass of the speakers shook the tent, and the roar of the beach crowd blended to a hum. Finally, one of the buyers shrugged. “It’s all just so confusing,” he said.

Does Fox/Disney even expect to recoup that $14? Malick’s box office has declined with his prestige, and this sounds like another polarizing film - not that that’s anything new for Malick. Maybe they’ll market it like one of Disney’s inspirational family dramas. Those are usually good for at least $20 mil...
I’m ecstatic that Bong took the Palme. But then, I even think Okja’s an underrated masterpiece. The Sciamma sounds very exciting, though. It’s nice that the most acclaimed film about queer women this year was actually made by a queer woman.

Has anyone picked up the Triet yet? Sucks that it managed to get intriguing writeups and responses and still went away empty, everything I've read has just moved it right up to the top of my most anticipated list

Only three films from last year's competition didn't end up with distribution---Ayka, Yomeddine, At War, so I'd say it's odds are still very good.
Competition distribution:
Netflix --- Atlantics
Universal/Focus --- The Dead Don't Die
Sony/SPC --- Frankie / Pain and Glory / The Traitor
Disney/Fox Searchlight --- A Hidden Life
Amazon --- Les Misérables
Columbia --- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
NEON --- Portrait of a Lady on Fire / Parasite
Magnolia --- The Whistlers
Just scanning the competition, I'd say the films most in danger of not getting distribution are Matthias and Maxime and Mektoub My Love: Intermezzo.

Yomeddine is out next week, it sold in September or so.
