I’m not watching the Globes (I’m guessing not many here are) but after reading about the controversy already I just watched Ricky Gervais’ speech.. however you feel about the guy, not giving a single fuck has reached a new bar and never more fitting than at the good-time club of the Globes to ruin so many people’s time.

Just rewatched the speech and that Ronan Farrow joke was gold. But the political hypocrisy linking the actors’ companies to the evil they preach against was even better.

It got real odd at times. I realize the The Hollywood Foreign Press is smaller voter base wise than the Oscars but was anyone expecting a Director/Best Picture win for 1917? And of course if Joaquin wins an Oscar for Joker places like Film Twitter are going to be even more depressing than they usually are.

And for clarity purposes I'm not knocking 1917.

Jonathan Pryce was not amused to say the least at the Farrow joke

The best joke was when he implicated everyone in the room in the Hollywood aiding and abetting Harvey Weinstein scheme. Like fuck they did not know.

Yep. Reportedly when the WGA granted Tarantino only a story credit on Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers he refused to join the guild, and that's been the case ever since.

Let me fanboy over Synonyms again - what a magnificent film. So little-seen and discussed. I couldn't be happier for it. I for one think a Cahiers mention to be a great honor.

Also a great endorsement for Les Mis given the recent discussion we had about it being a good choice for France. I think Sciamma was definitely a bit basic for Cahiers, I knew it had no chance with them. But I am surprised this made it, I guess I better catch it now.

Otherwise favorite returning sons up and down the list

2nd straight mention for Filho. I think he's going to be a favorite. When I saw I instantly knew Cahiers would pick it. It is such a Cahiers film.
Godard's 3 straight mention - 3rd for Film Socialisme, 2nd for Goodbye to Language and now no. 1 for Image Book which also made best of 2010's.
3rd straight Korean film for Bong (they ignored his 2 Hollywood films - Snowpiercer and Okja)
5th straight for Dumont, 7th overall (out of last 8) including 2010's.
2nd straight for Almodovar though only his 4th overall.
And finally American masters Eastwood (back after 10 years) and Scorsese (back after 13 years).
Philips is a new entrant and not entirely surprising.

My top 3 of the year - Parasite, Pain and Glory and Synonyms made it in. So I am a happy camper. The first 2 are fine but I feel people are sleeping on the Lapid. What a film.

But The Image Book isn’t even a movie so the list should probably be scrapped

I live in LA and work in entertainment so I'm part of the "awards culture" whether I like it or not. I don't like award shows anymore. I used to like the Oscars. However, last night my roommates and I decided "let's get wasted, turn on the golden globes, and make fun of it the entire time." We're all big stand-up comedy fans and like Ricky Gervais, so that was the appeal. Now personally I had never watched the GGs in my life. But booze, Gervais, and making fun of it...those conditions were okay with me. Dude, what a great time. We were nicely buzzed by the time it started. Thank you Ricky Gervais for saying what we've all been saying for years...that award shows are meaningless. Love that he had the audacity to say it while hosting one, and his shots against the crowd were baller. He may have ruined some people's evenings but he made mine. I don't remember much from the rest of the show and honestly forgot who won most of the awards already.

Other likely Oscar nominees that weren’t eligible include Dolor y gloria and the Farewell. 1917 getting in is a huge surprise and seems indicative of it having widespread industry support (see also: last night’s Globes)

I struggle with that movie so much. (Almost as much I struggle with Irishman.)

Sciamma is a good movie but I can't ignore the fact that it is extraordinarily conventional. It is very classical etc. The beats are perfectly lined up etc. I did not have an emotional response to it. But I see that it is well made. Even film comment, who are far more basic than Cahiers and who should have eaten it up hook line and sinker, even they could only place it 19th best of the year.

It is a good movie, but passion it inspires not. For an art film though, I would recommend it to almost everyone, even my Marvel fanboy friends. It is very agreeable you could say about it. There's nothing pungent there. I kind of have a feeling of admiring ambivalence towards it.
