I mentioned earlier on 'the other forum' that this most likely means it'll be That Most Important Thing: Love (based on the 'IMP' teaser) or Mad Love, as both are with StudioCanal. Presumably Radiance may do some cleanup work/regrading if they're to use the same masters already released by Film Movement and Kino Lorber. Sounds like they'll continue to try with The Public Woman, but obviously it depends on whether the licensor will let them do their own restoration, and now it's only one territory (UK) rather than US/Canada as well, that probably changes the likelihood of them shelling out for such a restoration.
Thing is, if they can ensure a 4K restoration fit for UHD, that makes the disc Region Free and therefore more desirable to those outside of UK/Europe, so possibly could change things for the better in a situation like this. Not always the case, but worth pushing for if there's just one hurdle to go through.

Ah thank you for the info. That makes sense. Very sad news as I imagine Film Movement will just release it as is.
Yep, and with awful encoding...

I've not seen any screencaps for the French 4K but the couple of reactions I have seen
weren't glowing.
Radiance seem to be quite exacting about the masters they licence - I recall that they also said that none of the Raul Ruiz restorations that are out in France were acceptable to them either.

With Ruiz we only spoke of titles that have not been released anywhere yet, we wanted to restore City of Pirates but it’s a complex set of materials and effects shots and the current master for Three Crowns of the Sailor was not acceptable when we saw it a couple of years ago.

Would the French licensor let you restore City of Pirates in the first place? They'd benefit too and perhaps even collaborate?

Not to interrupt Finch’s question but I wonder if Fran’s comment above could hint at the likes of Time Regained being a possibility? That could probably benefit from a Radiance re-grade and is quite long oop on Blu.
Anyway, hopefully Ruiz gets his day very soon, so many classics languishing on the shelf…
His producer Paulo Branco was involved in so many classics, by other great filmmakers as well (Bartas, Schroeter, Oliveira etc). But Spectrum have now put out the Monteiros, Grasshopper did a Costa, Eureka a Zuławski, BFI an Akerman.
I guess Ruiz’ filming methods maybe made his lower budget stuff more expensive to restore properly.

Apologies, when it was said 'nothing restored (that's acceptable)' I obviously interpreted differently!
Treasure Island has had a 2K restoration that I'm not sure has even been screened anywhere, which would be great to see...

It's one of Ruiz' greatest films, capturing his labyrinthian narrative inventiveness better than most other works, and just so much fun

They would but the materials are very complex and would have a huge cost attached. But even so there are also some paperwork issues. They are trying to iron these out I am told.

That’s my fault thinking just in the framework of what we’d been discussing then!

Thank you Fran for your answers. Seems like the licensor is game for this undertaking, at least theoretically. Best of luck in navigating all of this!

Wicked Vision just announced that they licensed the film for Germany and will be releasing it on Blu-ray and eventually in 4K. Great news at any rate.

UHD from a 2k restoration?

There’s no info yet about the master they’re working from. A French label released the film in 4K last year, so it’s presumably going to be the same one.

That's great news! The problem with Wicked Vision is that the release might not arrive in a looooong time. Anyway, will be picking this up, unless someone else comes earlier with the definitive release.

Radiance flash sale today:
https://www.radiancefilms.co.uk/collections/sale
Has
La terra trema sold out already and not coming back? Didn’t expect it to go in an hour or two given the message at the start of the sale. Everything listed as 99% sold out or 95% is still there, but that went immediately from 90% on the e-mail to sold out online.

The LE has been running very low for awhile, I think that’s what’s sold out. So maybe a standard edition forthcoming?

Sure, but doesn’t make much sense for that to sell out within a couple of hours of the sale starting, based on what the sale e-mail suggested.

I wonder if that one didn't have accurate stock readings as I already panic-bought a copy of this in January, on the day the newsletter came out in fact (it was on offer at Amazon at the time). I remember being surprised it was already on the low stock list as I had assumed it'd at least appear in one of the next sales, and then it did show up in today's flash sale.
Anyway it was 90% in that January newsletter, and same again in the February and March newsletters, and again today. No way did they blow through nearly 300 copies within a couple of hours unless scalpers are afoot (but even then, bit of a niche title to try and scalp). Italian scalpers? Dare I say...mafia?

I was going say it was "90%" in January as well so they may have neglected to update the number.
Regardless, it does have a lofty reputation and it's arguably one of the two most critically acclaimed (and historically important) titles included in that sale, so I'm not surprised if a lot of people zeroed in on it immediately.

It was a true day one purchase for me. Maybe check out Rarewaves or eBay to see if there’s any copies left out there

There's copies everywhere. I'm not worried about missing out. Just frustrated as otherwise I would have ordered immediately. I'll probably skip the sale now.

Criterion UHD soon?

How long do their licenses usually last? Or is it just the LE that won’t be restocked and a standard edition will substitute?

It's a 2K restoration that had to rely on a duplicate negative and positive materials because the OCN is MIA or long gone. I don't think a UHD would be forthcoming (or worth it tbh).
