Well, I hope they release at least Shame, Hour of the Wolf, and The Passion of Anna on DVD as standalones regardless.

I should've excised the "on DVD" in the post to make it clear that I hope the films receive the traditional Criterion standalone, as I am sure they will in time (unless they're fans of leaving money on the table). I do purchase DVDs exclusively, though---for budgetary reasons---and that I can purchase
Daughter of the Nile,
La belle noiseuse,
Three Brothers,
Underground, films by Bill Gunn, et al. in 2018 is evidence enough for me that DVDs are still having a good run.

But I don't get it. Blu-rays aren't that more expensive, and if you're already buying home media and care about movies, especially of these sort, what's the point of still being dvd only?

If Criterion is going to do a yearly ~30 disc boxset every November, I wonder what other things they can cover. I could see:
Wenders box
Almodovar box
Itami box
Ray box
Kinoshita 500 disc box
Harold Lloyd box
"Complete Bulldog Drummond" (my S/O would adore this) box
"Godzilla and Friends" box
"Hey look, we brought back all of those OOP Studio Canal titles in one go" box
"Everybody Wins the Criterionforum's monthly Quarantined Guessing Thread" box

On the website of "MOSTRA INTERNAZIONALE D’ARTE CINEMATOGRAFICA DI VENEZIA" appeared the list of recently restored movies, two of them are in collaboration with Criterion, here they are:

Death in Venice also happens to be one of those OOP Warner Bros titles rumored to be acquired by Criterion. Pretty much a certainty at this point.

Kiarostami likely will be next year's big box set.
Purely speculative, but I could see a complete Truffaut set happening.

Yes, it's very OOP, the biggest hope is to have, as i said before, Visconti German Trilogy Box...for a lot of reasons..The Damned is from MGM/Warner, it's OOP and even in Europe the Dvd is in bad quality often censored and rare, it was restored years ago by Cineteca but the restoration was never published(i don't know if 2k or 4k),then we have the OOP Death in Venice and Ludwig, published in a great blu release by Arrow...there is also the first movie of the director, Ossessione, now restored in 4k, the last dvd is great but a blu is necessary.

It'll be 130 years since Chaplin's birth in 2019. This isn't really a sexy number, but it's round anyway. It'll be 80 years for Kiarostami and 75 for Wenders in 2020.

Fellini’s 100th is in 2020. He seems the most likely, I think. What I wouldn’t give, however, for an Ozu box.

I hope this happens so we can finally get an upgrade of Juliet of the Spirits, a comeback/upgrade of Nights of Cabiria and Toby Dammit rightfully isolated and presented as its own short feature.

Fellini would make sense given that he is a titan of world cinema, but I'm not sure Criterion has the rights to enough of his films.

I think everyone is too distracted with theoretical box sets to care, but according to someone on the Blu-ray.com forums (hell on Earth, I know), someone curious about the rights to Jackie Chan's Police Story did a bit of sleuthing and claims that Janus Films owns the rights to it following the 4K restoration that played at MoMA.

But they have enough to do a box. Especially if the 50s output gets all new restorations.

I wouldn’t bank too hard on special anniversaries for box sets going forward. Harold Lloyd’s 125th birthday was last April, and since they’re clearly not rushing to give his films individual releases anymore I would guess the inevitable box set isn’t being timed for this year either.

Forgot to include it with the original post. If you follow their posts, you'll see that they were trying to figure out the rights for a few weeks.
