Criterion UHD soon? 😱 How long do their licenses usually last? Or is it just the LE that won’t be restocked and a standard edition will substitute?
A standard edition will likely come.

Over the next few days, prepare for films from Italy, Japan, Spain, Poland, France + USA

TX reveal: 08/04, 11am BST

Radiance Titles (and all Pre-Orders live): 10/04, 11am BST
Intrigued about what the Spanish title could be. More Saura? We're not expecting another Almodovar so soon, are we? The US title should be Vampire's Kiss for Transmission.

Fingers crossed for either La caza or Deprisa, deprisa, both have recent 4K restorations like Los golfos.

My guesses are World Noir Vol. 5 with the Italy, Japan and Spain titles (also wondered if La caza might count as Noir), Has' The Hourglass Sanatorium 4K for Poland, Mocky's The Witness for France, and Vampire's Kiss 4K for USA.

The Japanese noir could be another Kurahara (e.g. Intimidation, Black Sun), Suzuki (e.g. Take Aim at the Police Van, Everything Goes Wrong) or if we're lucky, maybe even Nomura (A Colt is My Passport)...

Not sure about the Italian title, maybe something from Damiani (e.g. Lipstick, Blood Feud) or even revisiting Petri (e.g. The Assassin). I assumed Radiance might release Lizzani's Bandits in Milan but that's definitely into more early poliziotteschi territory so we'll see (and would also come from Paramount who might say no to such a box set anyway).

If you’re going to do a Kurahara don’t do Black Sun without The Warped Ones please! The latter is an incredible film and the former is a sequel in many respects.

I imagine the France title is one of the remaining Truffauts since there’s a ticking clock on getting the rest out

I second. The Warped Ones is probably my favorite, with Thirst For Love second and Intimidation third. A box set would have been nice way to compete with last years Oshima set, though maybe Criterion is probably planning on an Eclipse upgrade.

Maybe Spain could be World Noir too. Something like a Muerte de un ciclista.

Turns out the Spanish title(s) were for Transmission too, a set including the brilliant film La cabina - never thought I'd see the day, my dad actually introduced this to me and I've loved it since I first saw it!

Amazing announcements, I may have to get both Transmission titles this month...didn't see that coming.

“Next month is magnificent”

I guess Il magnifico cornuto (1964 - Pietrangeli).

Two Boxes is showing as sold out on Radiance's site. That can't be right?

EDIT: they just fixed it.

They weren’t even going on sale until today, so I suspect it’ll resolve itself.

What's this? There's an "upgrade tier"?

This
As we are no longer producing separate Blu-ray only releases for our UHD dual-format titles, our baseline membership (once called “BD”) is now titled “Standard” and will include all Limited Editions releases in our slate. This tier does NOT include our upcoming UHD upgrades of pre-existing titles. Those that wish to have such upgrades automatically added for a discounted price can select the “+ UHD Upgrades” option. Members are also welcome to request such UHD Upgrades on an ad hoc basis during the monthly “Add-to-Order” request window, although these will be at full price.

I'm not sure to understand correctly the UHD upgrade bits : it looks like Radiance will do BD-to-UHD upgrade (like Arrow and Criterion are doing), but the phrasing makes it look like those will be exclusive to a certain kind of subscription.
I cannot not suppose this is a phrasing issue, and that WITHIN SUBSCRIBERS, those who want those have to choose the relevant option, but that these will otherwise to available to everyone to order.

It's not exclusive to the tier members. That tier exists as a convenient lumpsum for those who want everything including the format-upgrade titles.

EDIT: That said, I dread the thought of having to upgrade something like the Buñuel box set or Oshima titles to 4K UHD so soon... I hope they start by picking singles that were based on 4K restorations in the first place, such as A Moment of Romance, as well as those that have had newer restorations since.

it is confusingly worded. i would assume they just mean the Standard tier does not get the new UHD releases or the UHD upgrades, but it would be nice to be able to specify in your membership if you want the UHD upgrades of previously released titles or not. Radiance hasn't really been around long enough to start reissuing films, imo - how much of an upgrade could these UHDs even be?

anyway, what are the chances the Miike film could be GOZU? That's stuck in SD limbo...

Iranian cinema sounds like a box set surely? I wonder what it could be? Any restorations recently? Obviously it would be great to see The Cow in HD, as well as The House is Black, the Brick and the Mirror etc…

Intriguing and very timely right now!

As for Boro - I do hope it’s not just La Marge or Love Rites. Both are top tier films but both have lovely Blus. There are a few other Boro features to get out there… but I’m not too hopeful on this one.

Miike… could be anything, anyone have any ideas? Obviously if it was Gozu it would be huge… but I know there are yakuza issues there. Bird People of China is a big unreleased title. Visitor Q is finally getting released by New Wave but I can’t see Radiance stepping on their toes.

I reckon the Ferrara will be a title already released in the US like New Rose Hotel, but who knows?

Surely the Radical Japan set will be Terayama to tie in with the Boxer warm up release.

As mentioned in the quoted FAQ section above, their baseline tier ("Standard") will include new UHD releases (now issued as format combos), but not UHD upgrades of previously available titles. So they do give people options.

To be honest, there’s not a lot else that’s actually releasable, either for legal reasons (Immoral Women and Lulu unambiguously infringe the 1978 Protection of Children Act), which leaves The Art of Love and Emmanuelle V, and by all accounts Borowczyk was barely involved with the latter. I daresay there’s also the three-part triptych Private Collections, but he only made a third of it.

And of course neither of the films you cite have UK releases.

If the Ferrera title turns out to be The Funeral, especially in a new restoration, I'm going to do a happy dance.
