Interesting. Do they have any licenses with Criterion? Is this any indication that the rights outside the U.K. are handled by StudioCanal?

Just wait for the next WCF box. It should be in there.

They licensed the last Qatsi film to Crit.

As well as Kicking and Screaming.

Decent month. Glad to see late Ray (of whom I still haven't seen a single film, but hey, that's a good place to start), Thief and Rififi - I've been waiting for a Blu to see all of them. My dislike for Kaurismäki is legendary. No opinion on both Madx5 World and Davies.

Not so sure about that. I've seen a good many of Ray's films and love almost all of them.... but the late films (specifically The Stranger and The Home and the World, both of which I've seen) don't hold a candle to the early and middle-period stuff. Why not start your Ray Experience with, say, Charulata?

Agreed. Or In the Big City. Or, if you can find the UK set of the Apu Trilogy on sale, try these.

Agreed. That set is probably the worst possible place to start with Ray. My vote also goes to
Charulata. One of the greatest films of one of cinema's greatest decades.

It won the Palme d'Or and is an IFC distro. Seems like a pretty safe bet for sometime (though prob not Feb)

"Charulata" is truly great, though I must admit that there are quite a few culture-specific bits in it that as a non-Indian you'll probably only fully understand after watching the great extras on the CC edition. So perhaps apart from this masterpiece, "The Music Room" is an ideal way to start, especially if you're either into music or into Visconti, of whom this film always reminds me a little.

Not to forget they also released his previous effort.

If only Days and Nights in the Forest had a good dvd edition, with a reliable English-language translation. That would be a great place to start with Ray, I think. I recently saw the UK blu-ray of The Coward, and I was very impressed by that film as well. There are a lot of great films to choose from.

I think The Big City is a great place to start with Ray.

Film Forum has their new calendar up, with three Janus titles getting runs over the next few months: Harold Lloyd's "The Freshman" (which we knew about), Dino Risi's "Il Sorpasso" and Nagisa Oshima's "Boy."

Parade (Tati) CC starts to roll the Tatis back out. This one is restored and currently playing at the
Whoah-whoah-whoah-whoah-whoah!
Is there actually any evidence or even a rumor to suggest that Criterion has regained the rights to the Tatis? My Playtime blu is one of my most prized possessions but I would love to see matching CC blus of Holiday and Mon Oncle more in line with the recent BFI blus including the alternate cuts and such.
But I thought StudioCanal had these and that they were only distributing stateside through Lionsgate. Have things changed??

Nanook recently went blu via Flicker Alley. Would CC double dip like that?
Y Tu Mama Tambien seems likely since Gravity will be likely making award show hub-bub around February.

Didn't somebody here recently compile a list of all the supposedly forthcoming titles from Criterion? Anyone remember where that was?

It's always

Looks like I picked the wrong time to finally bite the bullet and buy an OOP copy of
Trafic from a collector. It literally just arrived in the mail today.

You could always sell it before it's announced. Though keep in mind that there's no guarantee they will be released any time soon. I put my BRD Trilogy up on Amazon when it went out of print and there were rumors of an upgrade being in the works, but eventually pulled it back because I like the film so much. A year and a half later, it seems like that was a wise decision.

Trafic is not coming back, it's Studio Canal.
Playtime, Mon Oncle, and M. Hulot's Holiday will be coming back.
