My ability to contribute during February and probably March will be close to zero.

I'm planning to do some viewing for the Sixties in the next few weeks, and then I'd like to take the whole year off just to catch up on all the blu-ray upgrades I've accumulated and that I don't get to see because of all these list projects!

Although I'll probably participate in the 70s as I do that, and I could be seduced into doing something like Kurosawa if it was selected since I did his 40s filmography then stopped (same goes for Minnelli). For Pasolini, I'd just contribute my already made list.

I'll contribute to any list project just to keep them going, but I hear valid issues with time management around decade lists, and my own ability to watch stuff is going to likely be tempered significantly as well. I'd still be interested in a Musicals List, and I think there are enough members who are interested and vocally invested in submitting ballots to make that happen- though perhaps it would make sense to make that one longer than six months? Not sure we want to jump there just yet, but it's definitely the one I'm most invested in (if only to motivate me to stop what I'm doing and finally dive all the way through Altman's book)

By all means, I will submit a Musicals list (I'd probably do all of the other immediately suggested ones too, maybe save Russ Meyer)

I'm thirding interest in a Musicals list, although I can't promise a lively discussion, which I know is really the whole point. I'd at the very least offer glowing praises of Haut bas fragile and At Long Last Love.

Honestly I would love for someone, if we tackled another musicals list, to really work out India’s contribution to the genre as they’re easily the national cinema which has made it the most essential part of their identity and our ignoring of them last time around is an embarrassment.

That’s definitely one of the areas I want to explore for the musical list as well. I’ve been intending to anyway; the challenge is just that they seemingly all tend toward the 3-hour mark, making them hard for weeknights.

Sounds like there is interest in a break for now (to finish up the '60s list and to catch up on other viewing) and then perhaps a Musicals list. I will leave the latter idea up to you potential participants and the previous Genre List coordinators.

I did think about a unique combo list of four Mistresses of Musicals with centenaries in 2022: Kathryn Grayson, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland, and Doris Day, but that seems a little quirky even for this forum.

Matt, you could champion the work of those four in the midst of a broader Musicals List Redux later this year. I think you'd be a great person to lead it since you have a passion for the genre, but I understand the daunting nature of agreeing to tally a full 50 film ballot / 100 film final list!

I'd likely take part also in a musicals list project if it takes place later this year. Anyway, I have several Deanna Durbin movies on my upgrade kevyip.

If there’s enough interest, shall we very lightly pencil in such a list with a deadline of sometime after June 15? That would provide a break after the ‘60s list but be generally out of the way of the ‘70s list.

I can set up a poll/survey on participation and deadline tomorrow.

I'd be up for pushing musicals another month for orphan rescue after that, so prelims in by 6/15, finals in by 7/15. That's 3.5 months + 1 month for orphan rescue for each list.

Traditionally genre lists get at least six months. There's also never been an Orphan rescue round in any non-decade list (though that will be up to Matt or whoever else ends up running them), as that's a swo innovation that is fairly labor intensive unless you're using his wizarding world of spreadsheets

I'd also mention that Musicals Redux were already voted on favorably by the board from amongst many other possibilities a few years back, but then so was the Deneuve list, so who knows anymore

I'd certainly be fine with more time for the Musicals list, with or without an orphan round.

I would it prefer it being pushed into the second half of the year. But that's just me - I don't want my preference to prevent it from being earlier if members generally are really enthusiastic about having it start sooner.

So… not an entirely encouraging response rate to the survey: 11 in total, but all were experienced list-submitters.

For unrelated and late-developing reasons, I no longer think I can commit (at least right now) to leading the discussion on this one. In my opinion, it is still worthwhile to conduct the discussion and list-making process even if it doesn’t result in a complete and “legit” top 100. But perhaps someone who did not participate in the last Musicals list (which was, mon dieu, more than 10 years ago) might want to lead discussion and someone else (who has done it before) could tabulate?

FWIW 7 out of 11 respondents preferred a mid-September deadline, and 5 specifically preferred an orphan rescue round (1 no, 5 no preference).

I’m more or less retired from running these but I think the only list I’d come back to helm is the Michel Piccoli list, assuming that was still something people wanted (he received just one vote less then Deneuve, but we saw how that turned out). This could be nicely dovetailed into occurring simultaneously with the 70s or 80s lists for maximization of viewing. Just throwing it out there
