Unrelated but Miramax has lost the rights to Jarmusch's Dead Man. Jarmusch has signed a deal with sales company Match Factory to sell the film on his behalf. Match Factory will also handle worldwide sales on the other films that have reverted to Jarmusch. (Permanent Vacation, Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Night on Earth and Mystery Train.) This was all announced at AFM this week. One would assume Criterion will pick up Dead Man.

It's still on the Miramax website but I notice that the streaming versions on iTunes and Netflix don't list Miramax but instead credits the original German financiers FilmProduktion.

I just read that Bertolucci's The Last Emperor received a 4K transfer and sound remaster, and to top it off... a 3D conversion to be screened at the Chinese Theater.

Is it just that film which had German financiers? Or is German finance a running theme in Jarmusch production? I've always wondered why we (in Germany) have benefitted from the complete DVD box set and subsequent quick BD release of Limits of Control.

Most of Jarmusch's films are German co-productions—I don't see a German co-production partner listed on The Limits of Control, though that doesn't mean there wasn't any German funding involved. Germany deserves some credit for "discovering" him, as Permanent Vacation received a surprising amount of attention there (top prize at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival, a Berlinale screening, a TV sale to WDR), Wim Wenders was an early champion and donated the film stock for the Stranger Than Paradise short, and the Stranger Than Paradise feature was funded primarily by ZDF and an aspiring producer from Munich.

To say nothing of the fact that Robby Muller himself photographed Down By Law, Mystery Train, Dead Man, Ghost Dog, and the Coffee and Cigarettes shorts.

Does Jim Jarmusch hold German citizenship? I remember reading somewhere that the German government helps (or at least used to help) a lot with its citizen's film production. It was the reason Uwe Boll was able to keep making movies.

This release of Blue is the Warmest Color is barebones, but a special edition will follow at a later date (I assume Criterion wanted to get it out early in lieu of the film's awards attention).

Goddamn... if not the best month ever, certainly the highest profile month ever!

Surprised to see Blue out so fast, but not complaining. Otherwise it's a very been-there, done-that month for me.

Except for Jules & Jim, there is nothing that appeals to me that month so my wallet will be grateful.

When was the last time they skipped a spine? Feels like it's been ages.

The greedy bastard in me though wishes that Blue is the Warmest Color was the full-on special edition that will come at a later date, though it's easy to see why Criterion wanted to get this version out during the awards season. I'll definitely be watching it again then to finalize my top ten of 2013, and depending on how low the prices drops, temptation may get the best of me and I may pick it up anyways.

Jules and Jim is a definite purchase, and Tess, Foreign Coresspondant and King of the Hall are all possibilities (haven't seen any yet). I may even pick up Fantastic Mr. Fox (I don't own the current Blu-Ray).

I already own the Blu-Ray of Breathless, so there's no real reason for me to upgrade here (although my OCD is going off the walls at the moment).

This is definitely a great month.

So, Breathless forever becomes the answer to the trivia question: "What was the first previously separately released DVD and Blu-ray to be combined into a dual format release?"

That caveat on Blue Is The Warmest Colour is a bit unusual.

Does it mean that supplementary features are yet to be announced or that the first release will be feature free (hence why it's also not duel), with a rerelease a year or two from now with bonuses?

It's definitely a bare-bones release that will get replaced with a feature-laden release later.

Holy shit, King of the Hill includes The Underneath!

The MSRP is $19.95 for the barebones issue. I assume that it will be reissued in a year or so with a special edition at $39.99

Very strange. I wonder if this will have 2 different spine numbers? Why would anyone want to buy the barebones release when they know it's going to be reissued shorty afterwards?
