Will it still be ok to make jokes about the commenters on Criterion's Facebook page?
Oh definitely

According to Criterion's FB: "Sidney Lumet just walked in!"

I love this response here:
some dude on Facebook wrote:You guys should release more Tarkovsky. Most notably The Mirror, The Sacrafice and Nostalghia.
Criterion wrote:Those would be good

Because it's the internet. Believe everything you read on it.

Good point...it could be someone from this Forum who set up a fake account.

Can't we quit discussing the Facebook account and just come to the conclusion that almost everyone who posts on it is an idiot who assumes a movie is validated by having a Criterion release or don't understand the idea of licensing rights.
Anyone see the question about why isn't there more Aronofsky only because it upset him to see a stacked edition of Requiem for a Dream go for five bucks at Best Buy?
And the Jeanne Dielman videos suck.

Has the Criterion FB site ever been acknowledged on either the main site or in the newsletter?

Hell, there's people there asking if there will be any more December relases!

I love how this thread has become a flurry of re-posts of what goes on at the Criterion Facebook page, intermingled with criticisms of the Criterion Facebook page as "weird" and "idiotic." It's kind of like the old Borscht-belt/Woody Allen joke: "the food here is bad, and such small portions!"

To be fair, they do sometimes announce titles late: most recently, Button was announced a few days after May's other releases. I did wonder if they were perhaps going to leave it very late this month and put more titles up this Friday but they've confirmed on FB that the AK100 set and the Desplechin DVD + Blu will be it for December.

I feel kind of dirty reading the Criterion Facebook page- it's everything I've always wanted, but so much of it- and everyone's so shameless.. I like to keep my nerdy lusting after esoteric DVDs behind the stately grey facade of this .org

I second that feeling, things have become so anticlimatic knowing what is being worked on and what is a possibility. I realize now I really enjoyed the surprises of an unknown release that comes out of nowhere.

Just did. We'll see what they say.

Which can still happen. Golden Age of Television, anyone?

Yeah seriously, I read through the list and it appears that a lot of people on here have been the ones asking questions, it is kind of getting ridiculous and I expect them to stop answering questions soon.

The facebook page has definitely been swamped with questions which could only annoy Criterion, but as for this whole 'living for the surprise of what's next'
who cares? if Underworld is in production, i'd like to know so i can get excited, they could just never tell us until a week before release date, then you'd all have lovely big surprises, but to me, release schedules aren't a game. I'd love to know all of MoC's planned releases for 2010, i don't see how that spoils anything?
It's my one pet hate with the forum, and it happens every time, some exciting films get announced which have been asked about and speculated over before, and as soon as their announced people go 'oh great, now does this mean his film X is going to be released as well?' 'hopefully this means Y will be released soon'
Like now they know this film they really wanted is coming out, they don't care anymore and look forward to finding out what's coming up next!

There are two reasons for the Criterion/MOCs of the world not to say "Here are our upcoming releases in 2010".
1) Production is always in flux. If materials or rights run into issues and the title is delayed suddenly you have a whole bunch of people complaining and whining even more than they do now when an "announced" title is suddenly delayed for a week or two.
2) Marketing. From a marketing angle, it makes sense for these studios to keep a slow leak of info rather than a torrent of news and then nothing for a year.

For a week or so there I was checking the Facebook every day to see all the goodies and hints, as Criterion were surprisingly candid. Eventually it started to feel as if I were watching Ricky Gervias do a crab dance, and I couldn't stand to read all the posts without cringing and looking away. I checked it today after a few days away and the answers seem a lot less congenial. Oy.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Just make an account yourself if you want to ask. It takes two seconds.
