My favorite part was how half-assed a plan it was. Was Cotton Hill leading the Angels in '69?

Wow. Another insanely great image has just been added to Rock Mythology. This moment has to be immortalized in song, a la "Smoke on the Water".

I'm curious why they are releasing the Gimme Shelter Blu the way they are. I would imagine a shift to 1080 for a ten year old transfer will be all that impressive, then again look what they did to Playtime.

As someone mentioned in another thread, we can't assume that it's not an new transfer. Even if it's not, even a newly-encoded SD version of the transfer would probably look somewhat better than the existing version given the technological advances of the last 10 years. I suspect, give the film's 16mm origins, that the real improvement in the move to Blu-ray is going to be in the sound.

Just saw Get Yer Ya-Yas Out at the 47th NY Film Festival, out-takes from Gimme Shelter reassembled and edited into a 29 min documentary of the Stones' 1969 appearance at Madison Square Gardens. Entertaining as all get out. It's gonna make a great extra on the upcoming Blu-ray.

I've finished watching the BR of Gimmie Shelter. It isn't one of the MUST-HAVE-UPGRADE to BR Criterion releases for PQ . The improvement isn't as great as other bluray upgrades. You would probably get more out of the Audio improvement. The supplements may look thin on paper but the Audio excerpts from KSAN Radio's Altamont wrap-up is a fantastic addition. It goes for around 90min and i got more out of it than the commentary. You get everyones version of the story, including the H Angels.

Enjoy.

Strongly recommend the recent Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America doc about last year's tour of that region, leading up to their show in Cuba. The passion in some of those regions for Rock music, and the Stones' music in Argentina particularly, is quite moving to watch. Mick and Keith reflecting on their past escapades there, and the musical culture of those countries, all entwined makes an excellent narrative.
