this is the first time I've ever wondered if Criterion has ever gotten complaints from French Canadians for not having french subtitles. if they were a canadian label it would basically be a requirement I'm sure, but I wonder how that would go for French rightsholders in region B. interesting to think about..

Could it be something as simple as having one available that came as part of the package? Part of the film was shot in Belgium, it comes from a multinational production company that has an office there, Mathieu Amalric is in the cast and some of the dialogue is already in French.

It's extrememy likely Criterion could include dubs and/or other subs on several of their discs but almost never did, just like there are most certainly plenty of cases where they could have made their discs region-free but didn't.

It's a Sony disc in France, so I guess video rightholdings here at least wasn't an obstacle.

I doubt it's this; if Criterion were to add a French language dub but not add French translation to the packaging (which they clearly haven't), then the disc couldn't be sold in Quebec, negating the entire exercise.

That's true but unless they've locked down Quebec entirely people can still order it online and i still can't fathom any other reason to include the French subs on The Worst Person in the World .

It could also just be some sort of stipulation. Some of the other streaming licensed titles also include alternate soundtracks and subtitles, some even including descriptive audio tracks.

I noticed they removed the blurb that said there was going to be Dolby Vision/HDR, so I emailed Criterion about it and they confirmed to me that there is only going to be HDR10.

I see they are going down the minimalist route with the Chapters!

Yeah, just 3. Labeled as such:

1. Sound
2. Of
3. Metal

They're broken out for each act of the film.

Huh, admittedly didn't notice that and thought it was intentional, totally blanking on the fact that the Amazon stream has them. It appears the HOH subs do subtitle most everything, too. I have to figure it's either a.) the director doesn't actually want the subtitles there and Amazon forced them on, or (more likely) b.) it's a mistake on Criterion's part.
