Plaion’s 4K release was an upscale of the 2K master Radiance received for their BD, so hopefully it won’t be that as it’s nothing to write home about. I’ve reached out to Radiance and hope that they’ll clarify soon.

I’ve already received a reply from Bruno:

For this upcoming UHD release we got the full 4K restoration file delivered from RAI, and did a new 4K HDR pass.

The whole workflow was weirdly unclear back then, it doesn't look much better now, as I can't see much why, except a reluctant rightholder, the full 4k resto couldn't be used the first time around, and only a 2k file was provided (which, I suppose, is what this ultimately means).

You’re exactly right. Bruno confirmed just now that they weren’t given a 4K file back then.

Here's a sneak preview of the transfer notes if anyone is interested. It's very similar to the old one as it is the same restoration but we managed to get a 4K file from RAI this time instead of the 2K file that was provided with the previous release.
