If you're doing the collating, you can make the rules, as far as I'm concerned.

Nobody's offered any help on supplying the producer credits for the discs I don't have, which probably means nobody really cares. So I'll axe the Best Producer category, too.

Well, it was meant to be awarded to a member of the forum. It's "in Memory of B.Y. Anderson" because that dude was crazy pompous, intolerant, arrogant, and just generally a jackass.

I guess you could give it to Jesus, but he doesn't post very often and he's just so misunderstood nowadays. Hasn't he suffered enough? Especially at the hands of Mel Gibson.

Just curious. Was Jules and Jim disappointing before or after we found out that Criterion had used those few moments of reversed shots?

Fourteen people have already cast their votes (not counting PMs) and yet the final two 2005 Criterion releases won't be released for another week, by which time I thnk most people participating in this will have already made their decisions. I know this is just for fun, but Forbidden Games (along with Ugetsu) was one of my most desired titles that Criterion announced in 2005 and I hate to see it disqualified just because people can't wait to vote. I know this forum isn't exactly brimming with Clement devotees, but I do hope people will at least give it a chance when it is released.

No, Yes, I was actually fairly disappointed by Le Samourai as a film. I've heard so much talk about it, so much hype and yet in my opinion it wasn't nearly as good as a film that I thought was supposed to be far inferior - Le Cercle Rouge. Obviously I must be missing something essential, but my vote can always be erased by whoever crucifies me for my blasphemy.

I won't be seeing Forbidden Games until after voting closes. Something to look forward to in the new year.

I know this is not the place to raise this question but I am at a loss to where to start this...
Firstly, Whilst I applaud you shouting at the top of your voices your accolades for this years ...what was and what is the best Criterion release. Can we possibly consider also having a best non Criterion release... far more interesting and to think you are not limited to the ridiculous number of only 48 titles (remember there are two outstanding films yet to be released). There is a world out there of great releases and let me tell you the best release this year is a non criterion

MoC do a "best DVD release of the year" poll. I assume this is going to happen this year as normal and that most of those in this forum so inclined will be participating, so it would be redundant to do it again.

Can I vote for the same person for Member of the Year and Richard Cranium award? I think matt deserves both, frankly.

I was serious... I was really disappointed with the transfer. It looked really grainy. I LOVED the movie, don't get me wrong. I had never seen it before I watched the CC DVD, but the transfer was incredibly bad, especially in comparison to Le Cercle Rouge.

The suppliments and cover art of the DVD were exceptional--my gripe was simply with the transfer.

F for Fake was the run-away winner.

Jules and Jim was voted Most Disappointing AND ranked #7 for release of the year.

Jules and Jim winning the "Most Disappointing" category is the most ridiculous batch of sour grapes I've ever seen on this forum. It's an *astounding* package that happens to contain a really quick pair of shots that are accidentally mirrored in an otherwise gleaming transfer.

Ludicrous.

I will go on a limb and guess that it's not the same people who voted it for worst release that also voted it at number seven. The aberration is due to the laws of small statistics and varying tastes, there is nothing ludicrous about it.

Um ... "disappointing" and "worst" do not have the same meaning. Something can be disappointing but can also be much better than many other competing entries. The New York Yankees had a disappointing season last year, but they were certainly not the worst baseball team in major league baseball. In fact they were still among the elite teams. However, they failed to meet the high expectations that their fans require of them as an organization.

Similarly, Jules and Jim was not judged to be the worst release by Criterion. I'm assuming it was judged to have failed to meet the high expectations of the people who purchased it. Hence it was a disappointment to these consumers.

Yeah, but given the quality of films that Criterion chooses to work with, you could really say that no matter what film was chosen as "Release of the Year".
