The recent DVD release of Mathilde has a short documentary Denis made about Africa, but her short film with Descas is still MIA everywhere, and so is her early documentary on an African band whose name I forgot.

Les Têtes Brulées from Cameroon (great!) - the film is called Man No Run and I'd love to see it.
I haven't picked up that Mathilde disc yet - mystifying as to why it is DVD only when that film would really shine in HD. Seems like a pretty pointless release really.

I'm guessing the super 8 and 16mm didn't lend itself to a Blu-ray?

Trouble Every Day was available on DVD from Netflix long before 2014. I rented it in early 2008. I didn't realize anyone had trouble tracking down copies of it.

Maybe that's the thinking but the Jeff Keen BFI set shows just how great the grain and texture of 8mm looks on blu ray. There's got to be a reason why Denis used 8mm, therefore it ought to look like 8mm.

The 8mm Keen films are on DVD.

Sorry, should have said Super 8 (the Artwar films). Yes, indeed the early standard 8mm films are DVD only (maybe the original elements no longer exist?)

No, I think the idea was that DVD adequately replicated the look of 8mm film

I think MichaelB went into some technical detail about this when it was released, and the resolution of DVD was pretty much the same as the resolution of 8mm.

If I recall, I think there's even a disclaimer about this on the disc?

Super jealous. NW Film Center in Portland had Beau Travail on their February schedule but cancelled it for "rights issues."

No word from BAM as to whether those are 35mm, DCP, or a mix. Her films often are so dark (literally) that I'd be afraid a "digital print" would hardly do them justice....

Janus retweeted the post about the retrospective but last I checked, they don't have the theatrical rights to any of her films. Does this mean that they have rights to some of her films?

But they recently tweeted a poll about best "food movie" that included 4 movies, three of which they've released plus Trouble Every Day, which some folks were taking as a hint that it's forthcoming.

I emailed BAM and got this reply:
"It looks like these should all be prints except for High Life, Bastards, and Let the Sunshine In."

Struggling to decide on which Denis double bill to see at the American Cinematheque: Chocolate/White Material or Nenette/35 Shots of Rum? I've only seen Beau Travail (at the late, sometimes great Cinefamily several years ago)

a filmmaker isn't enough to tip me in favor of one evening.

I'm not the biggest fan of either White Material or Nenette, but Shots is better than Chocolat. But I'd go to the first one if Denis will be present!

35 Rhums is top notch Denis and if you have any positive feelings towards Ozu it's definitely the one to head for. Also Nenette has some of Tindersticks finest moments
And unless you need to kiss the hem of her robe the Denis Q&A will probably end up on Youtube

35 Shots is the only one of those I don't like so that alone would tip me toward the former pairing.
