I can't find you, Fop, what's your fb handle?

kidding me? That's strictly amateur hour.
Oops, I did know that. I've got two on my want list. I heard Trouble in Paradise was one of their worst transfers; shame, its one of my favourite films.

It's not a bad transfer, it's just that the film elements are in bad shape and there's not much that can be done about it. It's a good disc with an excellent commentary.

I'm Mark Ayala. I just removed my kitten photo. The last thing I posted on was their link to Wim Wenders' treament for Wings of Desire.

Heh. And here I was, scrolling down in search of a promised panoply of kittens.

If you check now, it's my neighbor's morbidly obese cat laying down on a table. Still adorable.

I think the Criterion is far too dark, at least in the night scenes. In the (very important) opening image, I can barely make out that the dog is standing with its front paws on top of the rubbish bin. I have an off-air VHS in which this is absolutely clear. No doubt Criterion did their best with what Universal supplied, but it would appear that better - certainly brighter - elements survive (unless they've been lost since the 1980s broadcast!)

Actually, that's what I heard too, so you're right, not a bad transfer, just weak elements.

On Facebook:
Question
Mother, Golden Demon, Westfront 1918, Gate of Hell - any chance of Criterion editions?
Response:
Yup.
Also from Facebook, in regard to Mädchen in Uniform...an Essential Art House release.

looks like they would also like to do a Blu Ray of Ozu's Good Morning (doesn't mean they are though)... I liked Good Morning, but there are a few other Ozu's I would prefer to debut on Blu.

Forgive me for begin green, but what might the riddle be? I've not seen the film(s). Maybe how to release them? As an Eclipse set or as a multi-disc mainline release?

Good Morning is in dire need of a re-release, though, and if they are doing that, it makes sense to do a Blu-ray version too.

If
Acts of the Apostles ever works out, it will likely be part of an Eclipse release ("Rossellini's History Films: The Ancient World") with
Socrates and
Augustine of Hippo. Criterion already licensed the rights to the latter two as part of a package with the other Rossellini TV titles, but has been unable to determine who the proper owner to the copyright of
Acts of the Apostles is. Nobody has claimed it. That's the riddle.

If no one claims it, they should keep a paper record of their search, include a note in the set that they looked and will be glad to talk with anyone who claims it, and release it.

Peter Becker: "Hey guys, waddaya say we set ourselves up for a copyright infringement lawsuit that could ruin us!?"
Criterion staff: "YEAH!!!!WOO!!!!!"
You don't think very hard, do you?

Ahahahaha if they did a whole new level of proper color for Ozu begins... On HD! Hm don't think they'd really tweak the colors of their Asian film on Blu.

Also
Acts of the Apostles in five parts runs 341 minutes, while
Socrates and
Augustine of Hippo run 120 and 117 minutes respectively - I suppose the former could just fit on 2 discs (3 discs much more preferable) while the latter two would be comfortably accomodated on single discs each - once that rights issue is sorted they all would make a similar set to the first
Rossellini History Films...

certainly. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was merely declaring my selfish interests. :-"
What I would give for a Blu of
An Autumn Afternoon.

I'd hold my breath on Ozu on Blu. Maybe if we lucky, we get Tokyo Story.

If they eventually revisit Tokyo Story on Blu with a new restoration (aren't the Japanese working on a resto already for some time?), they better rerelease it on DVD simultaneously - unlike 8 1/2, there is definite room for improvement on the Ozu.

so I should hold off on buying that? there's plenty of other titles on my wishlist...but that was one i was considering picking up in the B&N sale. Is it that bad?

It's that orange. Since there's a chance they're going to restore it I'd go with something else, for now.

There is a decent transfer of GOOD MORNING, far superior to the Criterion, complete with Eng subs, in Vol #3 of the Tartan Ozu sets (obviously R2 PAL) still available
here...
