I noticed that they got Robin Holcomb and Wayne Horvitz to do scores for the Naruse films. Does anybody know if these are going to be piano only or are they going to be small ensemble works like what they did for the Ozu retrospective?

Actually...

As for the rest of the month: I am absolutely amazed and I can't wait to purchase everything.
Highlight is Yi Yi on Blu. Ever since my uncle tried to stop Yang from quitting his job in Seattle way back in the day-to make films (my uncle reasoned that it was too difficult and he needed more training)...

After nearly a year of poverty-enforced austerity, Silent Naruse and Blu Yi-Yi are first-day preorders, and caution is thrown to the wind.

Glad to see Times of Harvey Milk is coming from Criterion. I still wonder if Gus and Criterion are going to release Milk since it would seen they could really load it with more extras than were on the first blu ray release.

Does this not bode well for Brighter Summer Day?

It shouldn't change anything denti, as that film is part of the World Cinema Foundation package which is being worked on.

I would hope it bodes well for Terrorizers and other Yang as well. I had no idea Yi Yi was a good enough seller to warrant a relatively early Blu-ray upgrade.

I can't help but wonder if Yi Yi's sales have been enhanced by all of those best of the decade lists that it was routinely topping last year.

Yi Yi sale's have also probably been improved because it's the sole go-to point (at least in America, and on DVD) for a key director. But being mention in best of the decade lists is probably key.

At this point can we say that no point in the catalogue is safe (is that the right word) from a blu-ray upgrade?

Question, and hopefully someone can help, I see on the rumored titles list Louis Malle's Black Moon is there. Beside it, it says, "Regarding Malle in 2010... "maybe" (Last Update: 12/09)". What was the confirmation on Black Moon (answered on Facebook or something)? Would really like to see this be released, but didn't know how "strong" or ahead they are on this film. Thanks.

It has been with Janus for a couple of years plus confirmation that it will come someday from emails/Facebook. I wouldn't hold my breath on it yet as we most likely will get Zazie or another title first. Never know though...

Do you think they will do a big package like BBS with no individual releases?

I don't think so, considering there's 13 titles, they might do a boxset and then standalones for Brighter Summer's Day, The Housemaid, maybe put a River Called Titas in with some other Ghatak films somewhere else? But I suppose it's possible, but for a 13 film boxset they'd probably only include a commentary and intro for many of them or it'll cost them quite a lot to fill each disk with interviews and docs? But who knows...

Anyone else think that Island of Lost Souls might end up in a Eclipse set with The Uninvited and something else? They mentioned on facebook how the materials they have for Island are in a dire state, and to me it doesn't sound like it's going to be a Blu-Ray candidate. Also, DVD only releases no longer seem to be happening for the mainline so I reckon Island is heading to Eclipse with two or three other titles..

Thanks alot. I guess we'll be seeing a Janus run before a dvd/blu release then. So that could be my heads up.

Happy New Year!

All I've got so far are:

Insignificance
Carlos

And is that Pulp Fiction with the briefcase?

Whoa, Pulp Fiction on Criterion?!

Guesses:
Man with gun = Carlos
Ghost cat = Kuroneko
Space station = Solaris
Marilyn Monroe drag queen holding a globe= Some Like it Hot and/or It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
Sunday calendar - Sunday, Bloody Sunday (or People on Sunday?)
Mexican beach = Y tu mama tambien
Coffee can = White Material
Eyeless man in water = Scanners

The rest stump me (sun/suitcase, lady hanging off the side, kid with the pillow, and the Wonder Woman looking chick)

EDIT: Actually, Pulp Fiction wouldn't surprise me, since Miramax's new owners don't care about physical media anyway.

White Material, of course!

But I think the Marilyn is Marilyn Monroe with Albert Einstein's head, which suggests Insignificance.

I think the Einstein/Marilyn Monroe figure is for Roeg's Insignificance.

You're right. The smaller image on Criterion's site made it hard to tell that was Einstein and not just some random dude (I thought it was Uncle Miltie at first, hence Mad World)

Yes, which is driving me wild thinking it's Interiors (which featured a female character clearly serving as a Woody surrogate since he didn't act in the movie). But the night gown get-up is throwing me a little.

Maybe Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex... (even though he's not the one in drag in that film)?
