Anyone have the Kino Lorber Blu-ray of They Might Be Giants? I'm wondering whether the re-inserted "supermarket riot" scene is optional during playback. I haven't been able to find anything definitive in any of the reviews. For me, that scene is entirely wrong at that point of the film and diminishes the film overall. It was a wise move to remove it.

I decided against picking it up in the KL sale as I couldn't see watching it if the scene is unskippable. It's an interesting curiosity as a "deleted scene" but that's it.

I seem to recall a poster on the Blu-ray forum saying it was included, might be worth looking at their thread for the film

Thanks. Found the thread. They did mention it was "included" but not whether it could be branched around. Still hunting...

I did find though that there are a number of variant releases of the film.

I've got a copy, and can confirm that the supermarket scene is *integrated* into the main feature. It is NOT offered as a standalone deleted scene, or accessible as an option via branching. Now you know!

I actually think it was the other way around if I recall correctly. Kino was going to release it and Johnson stepped in sometime after that. I might be wrong though. Yikes.

I love this film to death, but I'm going to have a hard time justifying this purchase.

Johnson wasn't aware of KL's upcoming release of Brick. KL seemingly didn't reach out to him and just took whatever available master was offered to them. It's only when people realised this that some reached out to Johnson on Twitter to make him aware of this, while in parallel people reached out to KL to push them to get in touch with him.
Something like this.

By the look of these caps, it seems quite colder and a bit darker than the previous master, but I don't see anything that problematic (though remember I'm dealing with Eclair and Ritrovata stuff almost on a weekly basis). Here though, the previous master look too pink anyway. And at least, the bump in PQ seems absolutely obvious.

It might be telling that his friend and regular DP Steve Yedlin did not respond when I asked him (on Twitter) if he was involved with Kino's BRICK. To say Yedlin is obsessive about color science and post workflows would be a huge understatement.

Which reminds me that I couldn't recommend enough Yedlin's website in this regard. His Resolution demos are tremendous.

More on topic, Johnson tweeted on Oct 24th than he AND Yedlin were "supervising a brand new gorgeous transfer" for Brick.

Yes, he's a fountain of knowledge for cinematographers and filmmakers in general. Yedlin has mastered his workflows to the extent wherein choosing a camera (for example, Alexa Mini for KNIVES OUT) is much more matter of ergonomics than resolution or 'patina'.

I didn't see that. Thanks for posting this!

I've read over the last 4 months of posts and can't find what I'm looking for. Wasn't there another Sword and Sandal title announced? Goliath vs Rome or something like that? Maybe I'm thinking of a different label.

edit: nevermind, I found it. It's Samson vs The Vampires aka Maciste contro il vampiro. No release date yet though.

KL with another Universal deal:

We can now confirm a new KL deal with Universal.
Around 200 titles
From 1916 to 2016
8 TV movies (maybe more)
1 TV series (maybe more)
...
Q: KLI, is one of the three mystery UHD titles a Uni title?
KL: Yes and maybe more.

That’s good news, there’s lots of treasures still in Universal’s vaults. Would be great if the TV series was a complete Blu box of Parks and Rec

Interesting news that Universal titles are available for UHD releases by boutique labels. (Not to go too far off topic, but Criterion has mentioned that they did an HDR grade for Rumble Fish.)
