It's the only Criterion Ozu I don't own, and I've been holding off buying it since about... 2000. It's not Criterion's worst transfer ever,
but it's in the top 10. Also, there are no extras on the disc at all, so just rent it until it's reissued.

oh wow. I didn't realize it was
that bad.

I bought Good Morning when it was first released and the rather terrible trasfer actually stopped me from buying any future Criterion Ozu titles for years (I still haven't picked up Tokyo Story.) It's a rather craptastic DVD and one of the major disappointments I've come across from any DVD company.

If
Acts of the Apostles ever works out, it will likely be part of an Eclipse release ("Rossellini's History Films: The Ancient World") with
Socrates and
Augustine of Hippo. Criterion already licensed the rights to the latter two as part of a package with the other Rossellini TV titles, but has been unable to determine who the proper owner to the copyright of
Acts of the Apostles is. Nobody has claimed it. That's the riddle.
Does this mean that any release of the other history films is halted until they can figure out the rights issue on Apostle? Terrible shame if so. Maybe they could, assuming they have the rights, package Socrates and Augustine of Hippo with the Age of Iron while leaving the potential Apostles for a mainline release.

I said: "I see that among a number of MGM/UA titles that have just gone OOP is Hawks' Red River; now, tell me that you've picked this up..."
...and they said: "Could be."
Which I'll take as a positive 'could be'.

Awesome news on Red River. They also confirmed some silent Dreyer and El Sur by Victor Erice.

I believe Criterion is seriously trying to gauge interest (they said as much a few weeks ago) and I would advise anyone who has Facebook and wants Criterion to release IFC's OOP ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW to respond to Criterion's query.

Criterion could theoretically snatch the rest of Dreyer's surviving, unreleased-in-R1 filmography in one fell swoop if its an Eclipse set, couldn't they? The President, Love One Another, Der var engang, Master of the House and Glomdalsbruden would be it, am I right?
And its nice to finally be able to see El Sur's confirmation.

Didn't know whether to post this here or on the Kwaidan board, but here it is:
Someone on Facebook inquired about the 183-minute cut of Kwaidan on Blu-ray.
Criterion's response: "according to our research, the 183-minute version of Kwaidan is not the director's final cut, but if/when this is reissued we will be sure to include the additional material as a supplement."
:-k

Or if you'd rather stick knitting needles in your eyes than see Miranda July in the CC, let them know that too.

I asked about the Miranda July about two weeks ago. They said they're going "back and forth" on it. They're probably just negotiating. The old DVD doesn't have any special features aside from a few deleted scenes, so there's room for them to work with.
The man inside of me wants to hate Me and You and Everyone we know, but I can't helping loving it.

Isn't that correct, that the MoC version restores material not included in the
final cut of the film.. i e the cut which was shown to the jury at Cannes?

I think it more likely they were referring to this:

They responded "yes" to my query about any forthcoming New Hollywood cinema, and Scorsese's "Boxcar Bertha" just went out of print alongside 3 heavily rumored titles. :-k

they semi-confirmed that february will have an eclipse release. Someone asked, "will we get eclipse 20 in Feb?" and they said, "looks that way"
of course kinda dumb cause there's no specifics, but oh well. Hopefully we'll get something incredible and unexpected, like the Bernard or Shimizu sets.
