If it's a 4K scan, maybe they can release it as a 4K UHD, seeing as Mad Max and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly also have gotten these treatments and The Long Goodbye has just as much prestige.

If the lab doesn't mess up the color or transfer, I would definitely get the UHD.

DeMille's Union Pacific (1939) was just announced in Kino's Twitter page. Was anxiously day-dreaming about a potential release for this one just a couple days ago. One step closer to having all of the Palme d'Or winners on BD.

Kino will be releasing Touch of Evil (1958) on 4K UHD. Three cuts of the film. No word yet on aspect ratio(s).

Absolutely huge!!!!!

This does seem like a higher caliber title then Universal usually lets out - they did their own special release just in 2014. Feels a bit like how MGM started just letting everyone license everything three or four years ago with no attention to the most classic things.

It’s encouraging, though - one assumes Double Indemnity is the obvious pair considering it was last released alongside this one.

Should be. That's been the case on every home video release since the 3-DVD set came out.

The real question is what aspect ratio Kino will go for. If they couldn't stretch to two cuts of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly then I doubt they'll stretch to six presentations of Touch of Evil

Having both ratios available on the MoC made it pretty clear to me that widescreen is preferable for this film

I suspect the Universal BD release from 2014 will be the template for the Kino 4K release of Touch of Evil, which had the three cuts in 1.85 AR only.

Also, unless I'm forgetting a release this will now be the oldest black and white film released on 4K disc in the US, besting Psycho by a couple years.

EDIT: That was not a well thought out post in regards to remembering what has been released (and is also on my personal shelf!), as the next few posts will demonstrate.

I believe It's a Wonderful Life holds that distinction, besting this by more than a decade. The Wizard of Oz would, I suppose, technically represent the oldest non-color footage available on a 4k disc.

I'm guessing that It's a Wonderful Life will be the oldest (fully) B&W 4K until the inevitable Casablanca and Citizen Kane releases. I can't really think of anything older than Kane that is likely to be given that treatment.

You're absolutely right, I forgot about those sets. Still, I do wonder how much further back studios will go with 4k. My hopeless dream is a Shanghai Express 4K or even something silent.

I'd be surprised if we didn't get some popular silent classics on 4K at some point, but it'll take 4K restorations.

Sony has mentioned It Happened One Night more than once in their polls for new 4K discs so that seems like a distinct possibility.

Further back than that King Kong springs to mind but I think it would need a new transfer, as the current one is quite old and soft now. Though I'm not sure they have better elements available anyway, so what we have may be all we ever get.

Silents would surely only ever be handled by a boutique, though if WB ever bothered to do something with The Wind, Greed or The Crowd, perhaps there could be a chance with those. The new upcoming restoration of Napoleon seems like the best bet overall.

This is a nice thought but I don't think it's likely. The few major studio silent blu ray releases (Wings, The Big Parade) weren't followed up with anything. My POV has been that if the sales figures justified it, we would have seen more.

Man, my memory was way off. I even own both Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life.

For someone who tries to keep track of these things more thoroughly I should have thought that one through a bit longer, lol.

I think the elements for all those restoration are so far from original nitrate stock you would end up with a very VERY heavy rain of duplicate grain through everything. CIty Girl comes form a muich better preserved neg, (dupkliacte nitrate?) but that's not what your'e asking.

Isn't Sunrise also a Fox title.

I'm not sure what the AR has got to do with whether a film benefits from HDR or not? But I couldn't disagree more in regards to its use with b&w titles, if that's what you mean. Higher contrast but with greater shadow detail and more nuanced highlights is a hell of a look, and I found It's a Wonderful Life and Schindler's List to be transformative. If done right Touch of Evil will likely blow away all previous Blu-rays.
